A recent sighting of a pair of juvenile green herons at 91��'s Point of View retreat and conference center in Lorton, Virginia, has drawn attention to the diversity of avian life thriving along the Occoquan River shoreline.

Jessica Avila-Franco, event and operations manager at Point of View, documented the birds earlier this summer. After consulting with local Audubon experts, she learned the observation was the first recorded sighting of green herons nearby.

“I personally have never seen a green heron at Point of View, much less anywhere else,” said Avila-Franco. “I keep an eye on our Audubon monthly reports as we have groups that come and do counts for Audubon, and they have never recorded one at Point of View.”

While green herons are not uncommon in Northern Virginia, spotting them can be a challenge.

"Green herons are much more secretive than the commonly observed great blue herons," said Cindy Smith, professor of environmental science and policy and K-12 outreach director for the Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center (PEREC). "They tend to hang out along the edges of wetlands and remain hidden in dense vegetation."

Smith said the sighting is significant because it documents a species well suited to the wetlands that surround Belmont Bay, the Occoquan River, and Mason Neck.

The semi-sheltered shorelines, abundant food sources, and wooded areas around Point of View create an ideal habitat for the species. The sighting serves as a reminder of the ecological richness of the region.

"The heron’s presence suggests that at least some of Point of View's wetlands and shoreline habitat provide the food, water, shelter, and space that the species needs," Smith said.

The green herons are only the latest addition to a growing list of bird species observed at the property.

Avila-Franco previously documented bald eagles, and staff and visitors have reported sightings of osprey, hawks, hummingbirds, blue jays, cardinals, robins, and geese, among other species.

The nearby Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, located across the river, has documented more than 200 bird species.

“One doesn’t necessarily think nature reserve when you think of Lorton, Virginia. But being on Belmont Bay next to Mason Neck, it offers us an incredible amount of biodiversity,” said Avila-Franco. “I feel it's our responsibility to be good stewards of the land and continue our conservation efforts. We open our doors several times a month to the Audubon Society, where volunteers conduct flora and fauna surveys regardless of the weather. These metrics have been invaluable because they provide a snapshot of what's happening in our area in terms of biodiversity.”

Faculty and staff at George Mason's Potomac Science Center, located nearby, observe many of the same species throughout the year. Bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, black-crowned night herons, double-crested cormorants, gulls, purple martins, and barn swallows are regular visitors to the shoreline. Watching wildlife has become a favorite activity for student groups and community members visiting the center.

"Watching a bald eagle soar over the center is often mentioned as a highlight of their visit," Smith said.

For Smith, the observation is another reason to continue documenting the bird life that calls the Occoquan shoreline home. The green heron sighting highlights the value of community wildlife observations such as Avila-Franco's. Scientists increasingly rely on photographs and records submitted through apps such as eBird and iNaturalist to supplement formal surveys and better understand species distribution and population trends.

From bald eagles overhead to elusive green herons among the shoreline vegetation, Point of View, which is part of the Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution, continues to offer a front-row seat to one of Northern Virginia's most vibrant natural ecosystems.

Three 91�� faculty members have been elected to the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (VASEM), an organization that brings together leading experts from across the commonwealth to provide independent, evidence-based expertise on issues affecting Virginia's future.

The newly elected George Mason members join a distinguished network of scientists, engineers, health professionals, and innovators committed to advancing research, informing public policy, and strengthening Virginia's innovation ecosystem.

The 2026 elected class includes individuals from the College of Science, the College of Public Health, and the College of Engineering and Computing: Distinguished University Professor Liping Di, Dean Melissa J. Perry, and Distinguished University Professor Siddhartha Sikdar.

Founded in 2013 and modeled after the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, VASEM serves as a trusted resource for Virginia policymakers, institutions, and communities. The organization convenes experts from academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations to address critical issues facing the commonwealth.

In recent years, VASEM has expanded its efforts through studies, white papers, workshops, conferences, and educational programs focused on areas including artificial intelligence, energy technologies, climate resilience, health care, and advanced manufacturing. The organization also supports initiatives such as the Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science (COVES) Policy Fellowship and the Undergraduate Policy Program, helping prepare future leaders at the intersection of science and public policy.

As members, the newly elected faculty will have opportunities to contribute their expertise through VASEM committees, workshops, study groups, and policy-focused initiatives that support evidence-based decision-making across Virginia.

Liping Di, Distinguished University Professor in George Mason's Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science and director of the Spatial Information Science and Systems Center (CSISS) in the College of Science (COS), is an internationally recognized expert in geospatial information science, remote sensing, and GeoAI. Throughout his career, he has led more than $60 million in funded research and has played a prominent role in developing national and international geospatial standards.

"The election to VASEM is a great honor, not just personally, but for the CSISS, the COS and the university. It signals that our geospatial information science and system research not only has been recognized by the scientific community but also has tangible relevance beyond the lab, which is the highest compliment I can imagine. I am eager to use the VASEM platform to enhance geospatial information research and innovation, promote collaboration among Virginia's world class research universities, and translate the knowledge and innovation into action through evidence-based policymaking that improves lives and economy across the commonwealth," said Di.

Melissa J. Perry, dean and professor in the College of Public Health, is a distinguished epidemiologist whose research focuses on environmental and occupational health. An internationally recognized scientist and academic leader, she has held prominent leadership roles with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and other leading public health organizations while advancing research, education, and policy in environmental health.

"Representing public health as a member of the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine reinforces the importance of bringing a population health perspective to the scientific and policy discussions that influence the well-being of Virginians across the commonwealth," said Perry.

Siddhartha Sikdar, Distinguished University Professor of bioengineering and co-director of the Center for MedTech Innovation in the College of Engineering and Computing, conducts research focused on developing advanced imaging technologies and wearable sensors to better understand brain-body interactions and improve rehabilitation outcomes for individuals living with conditions such as chronic pain, stroke, spinal cord injury, and limb loss. His work has helped advance innovative approaches to rehabilitation and medical technology, contributing to improved quality of life for patients while strengthening Virginia's leadership in health and biomedical research.

“It is a great honor and privilege to join such a distinguished group of experts at VASEM,” he said. “I am eagerly looking forward to working with VASEM to inform public policy in biomedical and healthcare technologies and strengthen Virginia’s medical technology ecosystem. I hope to represent an interdisciplinary and community-engaged research perspective drawing upon my experience working on complex problems at the intersection of society, health and technology, and elevate the voices of patients and community partners who are often left out of policy discussions.”

The election of Di, Perry, and Sikdar brings the total number of current and former George Mason faculty members inducted into VASEM to 13. Previous inductees include George Mason President Gregory Washington; College of Science faculty members James Kinter, Lance Liotta, and Jagadish Shukla; College of Public Health professor emeritus Naomi Lynn Gerber; Distinguished University Professor Emeritus Edward Maibach; College of Engineering and Computing Dean Kenneth Ball; Inaugural Vice President and Chief AI Officer Amarda Shehu; and engineering faculty members Missy Cummings and Elise Miller-Hooks.

New members will be recognized during the 2026 VASEM Annual Summit, which will be held this fall.

At a recent gathering of air quality researchers from across the Washington, D.C., region and beyond, 91�� officially launched a new center that aims to advance Earth system science in atmospheric composition and air quality.

The Center for Satellite and Earth Science Research (CSER), based in George Mason’s College of Science, will focus on delivering data-driven insights to support environmental resilience, improve public health outcomes, and inform decision-making at local, national, and global levels.

“We are excited to establish a platform for researchers to work together,” said center director Daniel Tong, a professor in the J. Shukla Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Earth Sciences. “By using the latest technology, including Earth system models, satellites, and artificial intelligence (AI), we can design and deploy better early warning systems for extreme weather events. Each year, thousands of people are killed by dust storms or wildfires. CSER is here to save these lives.”

In addition to Tong, the center’s leadership team includes Patrick Campbell, associate director for business development; Bok-Haeng “BH” Baek, associate director for research; Zafer Boybeyi, associate director for education; and Youhua Tang, chief scientist. Together, they will guide the center’s efforts to improve remote sensing, air quality modeling, and scientific workforce development.

“What’s most exciting is CSER’s potential to bridge research and real-world impact while training the next generation of scientists to work across disciplines and scales,” said Campbell.

The fourth annual Air Quality Research and Development Consortium (AIRDC) Workshop underscored the importance of collaboration across institutions and disciplines in tackling air quality challenges. The one-day event brought together scientists, modelers, and policy-focused experts to share emerging research and strengthen collaboration around some of the most urgent challenges in air quality and Earth system sciences.

As new technologies and analytical tools continue to evolve, researchers emphasized that partnerships like AIRDC and endeavors such as CSER will play a vital role in translating scientific advances into actionable solutions, which directly connects to university research efforts through the Grand Challenge Initiative and building a climate-resilient society.

“The greater Washington, D.C., area is like the Silicon Valley for atmospheric science,” Tong said. “We have thousands of scientists working on this topic in federal labs, universities, and industry.”

Throughout the day, researchers from such institutions as Johns Hopkins University, George Washington University, University of Maryland, Howard University, American University, and University of Maryland Baltimore County shared new approaches to understanding air pollution sources, behavior, and impacts.

Collaborators from the Maryland Department of the Environment, DC Department of Energy and Environment, NOAA, DOE, and NASA also attended.

According to Campbell, what stood out the most was the strong integration of satellite observations, advanced monitoring and modeling, and AI-enabled data fusion. These technological improvements reflect both the field’s challenges and how rapidly it is moving toward unified, data-driven approaches.

“Collaborations like this one are so important because air quality challenges span climate, health, and environmental justice, making cross-institution collaboration essential to integrate expertise, accelerate innovation, and deliver real-world solutions,” said Campbell.

This research supports the Grand Challenge Initiative's goal of building a more climate-resilient society.

91�� has launched a new master of science in quantum science and engineering, the first program of its kind in Virginia and one of only a handful in the United States. Designed to meet growing workforce demand in one of the world's fastest-evolving technology sectors, the program prepares students to apply quantum technologies across disciplines including mathematics, physics, computing, engineering, cybersecurity, chemistry, and biology.

Quantum technology is transforming industries ranging from computing and cybersecurity to healthcare and energy. As investment in quantum research and development continues to grow worldwide, so does the need for professionals who can bridge traditional STEM fields with emerging quantum technologies.

The degree was developed in direct response to industry demand for a workforce that can bridge traditional disciplines and emerging quantum technologies.

“When we talked to industry, they told us they want experts in STEM fields who also have knowledge of quantum science and engineering,” said Jessica Rosenberg, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and director of education for the Quantum Science and Engineering Center.

Reflecting the inherently interdisciplinary nature of the field, students enter the program with backgrounds in STEM disciplines, such as mathematics, physics, computer science, or engineering, and build quantum expertise alongside domain-specific knowledge. The curriculum integrates foundational training in quantum information science and engineering while allowing students to deepen their applied-area expertise through electives in external disciplines.

The master's program focuses on three key areas: quantum computing and algorithms, quantum communications and security, and quantum sensing and measurement technologies.

Rather than training students solely as quantum specialists, the program emphasizes preparing them to apply quantum tools within their primary fields.

“Our goal is not to train pure quantum scientists,” said Michael Jarret, assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Department of Computer Science. “We're training professionals who can operate between domains—people who can connect quantum concepts to real-world applications.”

A defining feature of the program is its emphasis on experiential learning. Students complete a master's research project, often in collaboration with industry partners or research laboratories, gaining real-world experience in quantum applications and emerging technologies.

This flexible structure allows the program to evolve alongside the field itself. “As the quantum industry grows over the next decade, this degree is designed to adapt with it,” Jarret added.

Through this approach, graduates will be well-positioned to evaluate and implement quantum solutions in both academic and applied settings while also communicating complex concepts to diverse audiences. The program is designed to be accessible to a wide range of learners, from current undergraduates to working professionals.

George Mason also offers a Bachelor’s-to-Accelerated Master’s (BAM) pathway, enabling qualified undergraduates at George Mason to begin working toward the degree during their junior or senior years. At the same time, the program welcomes students entering directly into the master’s, creating opportunities for both early-career and returning learners to engage with quantum technologies.

As quantum technologies continue to reshape fields from computing and cybersecurity to healthcare and energy, programs like George Mason’s MS in quantum science and engineering are critical to building the next generation of talent.

This program is jointly offered by the College of Science and the College of Engineering and Computing.

Xia Parkes did not arrive at George Mason University certain she wanted to be a scientist. Originally, she envisioned a future in dermatology after shadowing a physician in her hometown of Chesapeake, Virginia. But once she began college-level coursework, lab experiences opened new interests for her.

When Parkes graduated from George Mason in May, she had earned two degrees in just four years—a BS in Biology and an MS in Systems Biology through George Mason’s Bachelor’s to Accelerated Master’s Program. For Parkes, success was not just about discipline; she also credits the support she received throughout her years as a Patriot.

One of her most meaningful moments came during the Commencement ceremony after Parkes earned her bachelor’s degree. Although her family was unable to attend, she decided to participate after encouragement from friends. When she looked into the stands and saw her friends there, cheering her on, the significance of her support system became clear. “That was when I realized how much showing up matters,” she said.

That sense of community is what she said she will miss most after graduation. Through her involvement on campus, she built a strong network of mentors and peers who helped her see possibilities beyond what she thought she was capable of.

One of the more unexpected influences came through the Honors College. As a University Scholar, she entered George Mason as part of a close-knit cohort that provided an early sense of belonging. Later, she joined the Honors College communications team as a lead intern.

“I never saw myself as a writer or communicator,” Parkes said. “But learning how to tell stories, interview people, and explain complex ideas has been one of the most valuable skills I’ve gained.”

That perspective now shapes how she approaches science.

“Communication is everything,” she said. “If you can’t explain what you’re doing, you can’t bridge the gap between science and the public.”

In her classes, she explored genetics, biochemistry, and skincare research, including work related to hyperpigmentation, before landing on biochemistry through an internship at the University of Mississippi.

Parkes worked in Associate Professor Lee Solomon’s lab, where she contributed to research on protein synthesis and drug delivery. Her work involved developing and aerosolizing peptide-based treatments designed to track and inhibit tumor growth, with a focus on lung tumors.

She also had a 12-week internship at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis.

“Seeing drug discovery from the ground up has been transformative,” she said. “You don’t just learn about medicine. You see how it’s made, tested, and refined.”

Her academic achievements at George Mason are matched by deep campus involvement. She has served as a resident assistant, participated in Student Government, and worked as a biology peer mentor, learning assistant, and research assistant. She is also president of the George Mason chapter of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE), which sponsored her to travel to and present at conferences and helped her connect fellow students to research and internship opportunities.

“My involvement came from being pushed by professors, friends, and mentors,” she said. “They helped push me to try things even when I felt out of place.”

From a nervous first-year student navigating unfamiliar spaces to a confident leader encouraging others to step beyond self-doubt, Parkes sees her college experience as transformational.

“I came here unsure of myself,” she said. “Now, I leave knowing that what I thought were my limits weren’t limits at all.”

As she prepares for the next chapter in pharmacy school, Parkes hopes future students take one lesson from her journey: Perfection is not the goal.

“You don’t have to have everything figured out,” she said. “You just have to keep going and let yourself grow along the way.”

Beginning a PhD is rarely straightforward. Beginning one just as the world shuts down adds an entirely new dimension to adaptability. For 91�� biosciences PhD student Matthew Lefkowitz, that quality would come to define his doctoral journey.

He entered the program in fall 2019 and had only just begun settling into graduate life when the COVID-19 pandemic brought research across the world to a halt. Laboratories closed, projects paused indefinitely, and traditional academic timelines dissolved almost overnight.

Rather than waiting for things to return to normal, he adapted.

With laboratory access limited, Lefkowitz shifted his focus to coursework. Over the next two years, he completed 52 graduate credit hours. As the pandemic continued to disrupt traditional research pathways, George Mason supported him in pursuing external research opportunities.

After months of persistence, he secured a position at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), becoming a pre-doctoral Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) Fellow. There, he worked across two institutes: the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).

The experience placed him in a highly interdisciplinary environment that brought together biology, computational science, and translational research—an ideal fit for his background.

“It combined problem-solving with the opportunity to work on challenges where there isn’t already a clear answer. That made it feel like a natural fit for my interests in math and science,” he said.

At the core of his doctoral work is the study of rare neuromuscular disorders, particularly congenital muscular dystrophy. Using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning, Lefkowitz’s research aims to better understand disease mechanisms and improve predictions of clinical outcomes, which is an especially complex challenge in the context of rare disease research.

While his interest in neuromuscular disease is informed, in part, by his own experience living with a rare neuromuscular disorder, he is equally motivated by the broader impact this work could have on improving diagnosis and care for patients facing similar conditions.

“The biggest challenge in the field right now is making sense of very small patient populations, which is often the case with rare diseases. When you’re working with such limited data, it becomes much harder to predict outcomes or draw reliable conclusions from what clinicians are observing.”

Before beginning his doctoral studies at George Mason, Lefkowitz applied to PhD programs nationwide. Despite strong academic credentials and a biomedical engineering degree from Virginia Tech, he faced widespread rejection.

The challenge, he said, stemmed from his training emphasis in mathematics, systems thinking, and problem-solving rather than extended wet-lab experience—skills that are highly valuable in interdisciplinary research.

George Mason saw potential others overlooked.

“Mason didn’t just look at what I hadn’t done,” he said. “They saw the potential of what I could do.”

Since joining George Mason and later gaining experience at the NIH, Lefkowitz said he has grown significantly as both a researcher and an independent scientist.

“I grew in ways I couldn’t have imagined, especially in learning how to advocate for myself,” he said. “You have to take initiative and make those resources work for you. That meant learning to speak up, to position myself in the spaces where science is happening. That experience gave me a level of confidence I didn’t have before.”

Throughout his doctoral journey, mentorship has played a critical role. Lefkowitz credits School of Systems Biology faculty, including Ancha Baranova and Alessandra Luchini, as well as members of his doctoral committee, for providing guidance during pivotal moments.

“The difference was trust. Mason trusted me to figure things out and supported me while I did,” he said. “A PhD doesn’t teach you how to avoid challenges. It teaches you how to respond to them.”

Konrad Wessels, associate professor of geography and geoinformation science at 91��, is part of a NASA-funded team studying how ice levels and ecosystem carbon stock are changing—work that could impact climate resilience planning, disaster management, ocean navigation, and national security.

Wessels is contributing to NASA’s Earth Dynamics Geodetic Explorer mission (EDGE), which will be the world’s first satellite system to use imaging laser altimetry to map Earth’s surface. Selected after a two-year development and evaluation process, this EDGE mission relies on laser altimetry, a technique that sends pulses of light toward Earth and measures the time it takes for them to reflect back to the spacecraft.

These measurements allow scientists to precisely calculate the elevation of land, ice, and forest structure. If confirmed, the total estimated cost of EDGE, not including the launch, will not exceed $355 million, with a mission launch date of no earlier than 2030.

“The NASA EDGE mission will generate high-resolution, three-dimensional views of forests and savanna ecosystems, along with detailed measurements of glaciers, ice sheets, and sea ice,” said Wessels. “Together, this data will help scientists better understand how ice and forests are changing over time. It also has a rapid response capability, which can collect higher-detail data in case of emergencies or natural disasters.”

Wessels’ role has focused on ensuring the mission can accurately track changes in the world’s forests and savannas. As a member of the Terrestrial Ecosystems Science team, he helped develop a Science Traceability Matrix, a framework that connects the mission’s scientific objectives to specific measurement requirements. This includes forest height, fire fuel loads, biomass/carbon stocks, and their changes. This process directly informs the design of the mission’s LiDAR sensor, satellite orbits, and data-processing methods.

“Tracking global forest carbon stocks is critical for understanding how Earth is responding to environmental change, especially since carbon emissions from land-use change and forest degradation rival those from the entire transportation sector,” Wessels said. “By improving our ability to monitor forests worldwide, this mission can inform natural resource management efforts that aim to protect forest carbon stocks and biodiversity along with many ecosystem services. EDGE could provide a quantum leap forward in monitoring forest structure and dynamics around the world.”

The EDGE mission brings together 25 scientists and engineers from institutions around the world. Helen Amanda Fricker, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California San Diego, is principal investigator, and John Armston of the University of Maryland is the deputy principal investigator. Mission leadership also includes instrument principal investigator Bryan Blair and project scientist Scott Luthcke from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

In a NASA-issued press release, Nicky Fox, associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., described the importance of EDGE and the recently advancing STRIVE (Stratosphere Troposphere Response using Infrared Vertically-resolved light Explorer) missions. “By understanding Earth’s surface topography, ecosystems, and atmosphere, these missions will help us better study the extreme environments beyond our home planet to ensure the safety of astronauts and spacecraft as we return to the Moon with the Artemis campaign and journey onward to Mars and beyond,” he said.

Deputy PI Armston spoke to Wessels’ contributions, saying, "Konrad has helped shape EDGE’s science to capture the dynamics of savanna ecosystems and their response to disturbance and environmental change and will play a key role in the mission’s calibration and validation efforts across terrestrial ecosystems."

In addition to Wessels, the terrestrial ecosystem structure team includes researchers from Boise State, the National University of Singapore, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, UCLA, the University of Bristol, the University of Maryland, U.S. Forest Service, and the U.S. Geological Survey. The ice elevation team includes scientists from the British Antarctic Survey, the Colorado School of Mines, the University at Buffalo, the University of Tasmania, and the University of Washington.

The EDGE project has been selected for continued development as part of NASA’s Earth System Explorers Program, which conducts principal investigator-led Earth science missions based on key priorities laid out by the science community and national needs. The EDGE mission will be subject to confirmation review in 2027, which will assess the mission’s progress and the availability of funds.

When it comes to predicting extreme weather events, most people think of short-term forecasts such as flash floods or sudden storms. For farmers, water managers, and policymakers, however, the greater challenge often lies in anticipating seasonal extremes, including prolonged droughts or flooding. These events can have devastating economic and environmental impacts, particularly in states like Virginia, where drought ranks as the second costliest natural disaster after tropical cyclones.

Benjamin Cash, research professor in 91��’s Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Earth Sciences, is leading a $1 million project funded by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to improve seasonal precipitation forecasts in Virginia.

“We are trying to improve predictions of extremes and precipitation on the time scale of the season; something water managers need to know,” Cash said.

Historically, NOAA has employed specialized forecasting models tailored to different hazards and time scales. While this approach enabled advances in some areas, it also limited the ability to efficiently share improvements across forecasting models.

Cash’s research seeks to advance this framework through the Unified Forecast System (UFS), a single, open-source code base accessible to the research community. By consolidating modeling efforts, UFS streamlines maintenance and allows scientific innovations to benefit forecasts across short-range, medium-range, and seasonal scales.

This shift also reflects NOAA’s move toward a community-driven model, inviting researchers nationwide to use and improve the system. “More eyes on the model are more opportunities to improve it,” Cash said.

“Unlike exploratory modeling, this project takes a hypothesis-driven approach, asking targeted questions about how misrepresentations of key climate features, such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, affects seasonal predictions,” Cash explained.

Through a series of controlled experiments, including long-term baseline runs and progressively constrained simulations, the team aims to isolate sources of error and identify ways to improve accuracy.

George Mason will also play a key role in the UFS project by expanding education and training opportunities for future climate scientists. The grant includes a hands-on component designed to teach students how to use NOAA’s forecasting models. Faculty members will develop tutorials and conduct practical sessions; refining materials as challenges arise, such as adapting models to different computing environments.

“We want students to be able to use it as a research tool in their classwork or as part of a thesis,” Cash said. “One element of the proposal is hands-on training for students in the climate dynamics program.”

Beyond George Mason, these resources will be shared with other institutions, enabling students nationwide to engage with advanced climate modeling and contribute to improvements in seasonal forecasting. Broadening access and participation to strengthen the next generation of researchers and accelerate innovation in climate prediction supports George Mason’s Grand Challenge Initiative and the goal of building a climate-resilient society.

The work will unfold in phases through 2028, beginning with long-term model simulations, followed by experiments that progressively constrain the model to observed conditions. Success will include not only answering key scientific questions but also uncovering unexpected issues, such as bugs in model code, that lead to broader improvements.

“My hope is that at the end of this project we will have made measurable, tangible contributions toward improving seasonal forecasts for the United States, particularly precipitation extremes,” Cash said.

This research supports the Grand Challenge Initiative's goal of building a more climate-resilient society.

In 91��’s College of Science—where nearly 16% of students are connected to the military—Air Force veteran Rylee Ledoux is using her public health experience and passion for the environment to support fellow veterans and pursue a future in environmental science. A former Air Force public health technician, she now serves as the senior military transition coordinator in Mason’s Office of Military Services while completing her bachelor of science in environmental science and policy.

After graduating high school, Ledoux joined the military after seeing her sister’s experience in the Army and the opportunities it offered to see the world. “The Air Force felt like a good way to learn, grow, and set myself up for something meaningful,” she said.

That decision led her to Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas, where she rotated through several areas of public health, including occupational health, deployment medicine, and communicable disease.

Then COVID-19 hit.

“Overnight the workload exploded,” she recalled. “I was assigned to a mission in Washington, D.C., for COVID operations, and that set the tone for the rest of my Air Force experience. I spent the remainder of my service in communicable disease, and it shaped a lot of how I see public health and the environment today.”

That experience became the foundation for Ledoux’s next chapter after completing four years in the Air Force. Drawn to the intersection of science and policy, she chose George Mason for its strong environmental programs, proximity to the nation’s capital, and reputation as a leading research institution.

“Working in communicable disease shows you really quickly how connected environmental health is to human health,” she said. “I wanted to study the root causes instead of only reacting to symptoms.”

Now, as part of Environmental Science and Policy professor Changwoo Ahn’s wetland ecology lab, Ledoux is learning to design and conduct research focused on restoration and ecosystem resilience. “I’m learning how to be precise in the field and how to understand ecological systems in a more meaningful way,” she said. “My goal after my master’s is to become a wetland ecologist and hopefully do restoration work.”

Ledoux will graduate this fall with her bachelor’s degree and, through George Mason’s Bachelor’s-to-Accelerated-Master’s pathway, will continue into the environmental science and policy master’s program.

Her commitment to community extends beyond the lab. She serves on the College of Science Dean’s Student Advisory Council and, through her work in the Office of Military Services, supports military-affiliated students as they transition to academic life.

“My biggest advice for veterans is to ask questions early and reach out to the Office of Military Services,” she said. “Community is everything at George Mason, especially for veterans. Once you lean into that community and participate in it, it gives you support, connection, and direction.”

That same sense of community and curiosity continues to guide her own journey. Beyond academics, Ledoux encourages others to embrace opportunities like studying abroad. She has participated programs in both Nepal and New Zealand.

“Seeing different cultures and ecosystems changed how I think about the world and my work,” she said. “I always tell people to take any chance they have to study abroad because it genuinely broadens your horizons.”

Looking back, Ledoux credits her military service with shaping both her resilience and sense of purpose. “It grounded me,” she said. “It taught me how to manage tough situations without losing focus. It was challenging, but it made me more disciplined, resilient, and goal oriented. I’m a better person because of it.”

From cloning endangered black-footed ferrets to using drone technology to track wildlife to caring for red pandas up close, researchers at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute are working at the forefront of conservation science. As a global leader in conservation research, the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation (SMSC), which is a partnership between 91�� and the Smithsonian, offers hands-on experiences to undergraduate students that few other institutions can match.

Now, students across the country can apply to take part in this kind of hands-on opportunity thanks to a ten-week summer research experience at SMSC through the National Science Foundation-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program.

The 2025 REU Saving Critically Endangered Species and Habitats: Next-Generation Education, Research, and Training for Conservation Biologists is only the second REU awarded to George Mason. The program is led by College of Science dean and principal investigator Cody W. Edwards, alongside biology professor and co-principal investigator David Luther.

At the Smithsonian’s Front Royal, Virginia, site, 10 participants will take part in field-based conservation projects. These students will work on developing strategies to preserve endangered species and acquire skills applicable to careers in conservation biology.

“One of the best things about George Mason is the wide range of backgrounds and experiences our students bring, along with the access we provide to top-tier research thanks to our location and partnerships with leading institutions like the Smithsonian,” said Edwards. “Hosting an REU allows us to expand that access nationwide, reaching students who are passionate about conservation and eager to make an impact, but who may not yet be aware of the opportunities available at George Mason.”

Edwards said the REU will act as an “amplifier,” offering a launchpad for students who have the passion and potential but lack exposure to advanced training in the field.

“This learning opportunity is incredibly difficult to replicate as you get both a world-class education, along with an expanded network of top industry professionals,” said Edwards. “Many students apply to work with Smithsonian scientists and researchers at George Mason, and now this REU provides a broader pathway to do that.”

Participants will engage with researchers and mentors like Edwards and Luther in a collaborative setting that blends fieldwork and lab-based research. Through these collaborations, students will deepen their research experience, gain critical career skills, grow professional networks, and generate findings with potential to impact conservation efforts globally.

“Everyone I’ve met got their start with the help of a good mentor,” said Luther. “People can do a lot of good work on their own, but having someone to guide you early on, someone who helps shape how you approach problems, work through challenges, and make sound decisions is invaluable. That’s why I think this grant and the research experience it offers undergraduates is so special.”

Students will focus their work in one of three core areas aligned with the school’s expertise: assessing and monitoring wild populations, studying ecological resilience in the face of environmental threats, or improving the care and management of species in human care.

The SMSC is distinguished by its rich history of renowned experts and visionary faculty dedicated to educating and inspiring the next generation of conservation leaders. Over the years, the school has welcomed some of the most influential figures in environmental science. The late Jane Goodall, a global icon of wildlife conservation, visited the campus in 2017, 2018, and 2019 to share her insights and engage with students. George Mason’s Department of Environmental Science and Policy was also home to the legendary Thomas Lovejoy, often referred to as the “Godfather of Biodiversity,” who mentored some of SMSC’s current faculty.

“What excites me most about the REU is the opportunity it creates, not just for the individual students, but for the broader conservation community,” Edwards said. “Their work can spark new ideas and help drive forward conservation initiatives beyond their own project, and builds networks of individuals who can collaborate to drive big changes.”
