An internship can lead to the experience of a lifetime. And that includes Mason LIFE students who are interning on Capitol Hill.</span></p> <p>Established by former Representative Gregg Harper in 2010, the <a href="https://masonlife.gmu.edu/news/stories/news-congressional-internships">Gregg and Livingston Harper Congressional Internship Program for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities</a> matches <a href="https://masonlife.gmu.edu/">Mason LIFE</a> students with House and Senate congressional office internships. Students start their internships in their second year and continue them through completion of the program.</p> <p>“We’re helping them gain the skills needed to seek a fulfilling career when graduating from the program,” explained Linn Jorgenson, director of Mason LIFE, a four-year nondegree educational transition program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. One of Mason LIFE’s core curriculum requirements that supports this development is the <a href="https://masonlife.gmu.edu/employment">internship</a>.</p> <p>“We’re helping them learn what they like and don’t like, how to make decisions on their own, and developing their ability to advocate for themselves,” Jorgenson added.</p> <p>This fall, eight Mason LIFE students interned across 16 different congressional offices on Capitol Hill. &nbsp;</p> <p>“My favorite part is getting to see what happens behind the scenes of the government,” said Madison Gulley, a third-year Mason LIFE student and one of the congressional interns.</p> <figure role="group"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/extra_large_content_image/public/2025-12/img_0615_1.jpeg?itok=w7QRMYj0" width="1000" height="750" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Mason LIFE students and peer support staff in Washington, D.C. Students in the program tackle a variety of work for their assigned congressional offices: answering phones, researching bills, delivering mail, giving tours, and doing data entry, to name a few.</p> <p>“The students working on the Hill are part of a team, completing work that is essential and meaningful to all parties involved,” emphasized Jorgenson.</p> <p>“When our students come to their internships, our peer support staff are there to facilitate inclusion and support students in successfully completing tasks,” said Melissa Chabot, employment and community involvement coordinator for Mason LIFE. “So not only are these necessary jobs done, you know they’ll be done well.”</p> <p>Through the internship program, Mason LIFE students learn independence, confidence, and social and cultural competencies; they build valuable resume skills; and they explore their interests to see if they’re the right fit for a long-term career. And for the peer support staff, the benefits are just as important.</p> <p>Ankit Borle, one of the newer peer support staff, is working toward a master’s in data analytics engineering. “I’ve learned to listen actively, communicate clearly, and tailor support so people can be independent—skills that build trust with teammates, clients, and stakeholders...Most importantly, I’m taking forward an inclusive mindset—making sure every voice is heard—which will make me a stronger colleague and leader wherever I work,” Borle said.</p> <p>Madison Shaw, a graduate student in the Master of Social Work Program, has worked with Mason LIFE for three years. “It can be so important to focus on abilities versus disabilities. Each student carries so many strengths within themselves and has a lot to offer,” she said.</p> <p>There’s a similar benefit to the employer. “Mason LIFE students bring an important perspective to the office,” said Chabot. “Employers get an opportunity to reflect on their inclusivity. What are the employers doing that helps everyone be successful, and where can they improve?”</p> <p>And the joy of watching their fellow students succeed is perhaps the greatest reward of all.</p> <p>Peer coach Nehal Gundawar, a master’s student in computer science, works with one of the Capitol Hill interns. “In the beginning, they [the Mason LIFE student] were nervous about interacting with staff and unsure how to approach tasks without guidance...after a few weeks they began initiating tasks on their own and even asked for additional responsibilities. Their supervisor complimented their improvements,” he said. “Watching them grow into a more confident and independent employee was incredibly rewarding.”</p> <p>The congressional interns see the changes in themselves as well.</p> <p>“Mason LIFE helps me with the skills that are required to be an independent man,” said Amar Mailk, a third-year student.</p> <p>“Mason LIFE has changed my life,” said Aryaa Bhole, a second-year student. &nbsp;“Because of the lessons and skills, I know to stand out and inspire others and to lift them with my voice.”</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="70b2be25-db8f-4989-9ef1-54efc874d451"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://masonlife.gmu.edu/"> <p class="cta__title">Learn more about Mason LIFE <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="38f7ff56-217c-4d44-8d11-65575e9e7d73" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related news</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-db3f28a3012c5eb7f17b88eee555ea431bbd8b237784cf8d4714ddf8e21cf564"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/mcmeans-named-atlantic-10-golfer-year" hreflang="en">McMeans named Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Year </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 19, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/senior-knows-power-pathways" hreflang="en">This senior knows the power of pathways</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 8, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/learning-experience-design-course-helps-students-dive-head-first-client-consulting" hreflang="en">Learning experience design course helps students dive head-first into client consulting </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 6, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/mason-life-marks-20-years-enduring-impact-special-education" hreflang="en">Mason LIFE marks 20 years of enduring impact in special education </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 1, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-04/education-careers-week-brings-jobs-inspiration-george-masons-future-educators" hreflang="en">Education Careers Week brings jobs, inspiration to George Mason’s future educators</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">April 29, 2026</div></div></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="fa6d3db3-a224-41d4-8aa2-0eab61199f95" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><hr> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><em>This content appears in the Spring 2026 print edition of the Mason Spirit Magazine with the title "Mason Life students intern on Capitol Hill."</em></p> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="035acef6-1443-463e-be79-12890174ec48"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="/spirit-magazine"> <p class="cta__title">More from Mason Spirit Magazine <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> Mon, 01 Dec 2025 19:26:47 +0000 sholla4 344526 at Music alumna returns to the Center for the Arts stage with her students /news/2025-11/music-alumna-returns-center-arts-stage-her-students <span>Music alumna returns to the Center for the Arts stage with her students </span> <span><span>sbrown79</span></span> <span><time datetime="2025-11-17T13:30:10-05:00" title="Monday, November 17, 2025 - Once identified, each team collaboratively wrote a proposal to a senior leader within the organization to persuade them to partner. The proposal included how their team core values and goals aligned with the charitable organization's mission and needs, as well as the benefits (raising awareness, volunteerism, and donations) of holding the event.</p> <p>Once all four charities—Dulles South Soup Kitchen, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, Food for Others, and Britepaths—said YES, the event planning and management part of the project began to ensure they executed them successfully. Seeing the team’s hard work come together in an impactful way and witnessing the difference we made for Food for Others doing life changing work in our community was immensely fulfilling. And in the spirit of charitable giving, they all hosted the events at no cost.&nbsp;</p> <p>While the events raised an incredible $3,910 in donations for the four charities, the real win was the power of connection. Each event hosted a mixture of current students, staff, faculty, and alumni, as well as representatives from the charities and other members of the community, including many student family members.&nbsp;</p> <p>“The thing I enjoyed the most was the people,” says Honors College student Adam Miller, a rising sophomore with a concentration in business management. “I met so many wonderful students, faculty, and people outside of George Mason that were not only good connections to have, but also kind and genuine people to talk to and get to know.”</p> <p>“One of the best parts about being a professor is spending time with students, says <a href="https://business.gmu.edu/profiles/spilloff" title="Steve Pilloff">Steve Pilloff</a>, instructional professor of finance at Costello. “And the happy hour events allowed me to do that in an environment that was fun, involved a good cause, and where the students could demonstrate the wonderful work they did to successfully pull off the events.”</p> <p>“Food for Others appreciated having the opportunity to work with Costello College of Business students on their Humanitarian Happy Hour,” says Hannah Brockway, development manager for Food for Others. “The care and intention the students put into researching Food for Others, our impact, and how to best contribute was apparent throughout the semester. Students were able to connect, both with their George Mason neighbors and the greater community, while contributing to a food secure future in Fairfax, Virginia.”</p> <p>Corporate sponsors also supported each Humanitarian Happy Hour including Angel Tips, Good Neighbor Exterior Services, TFA Soft Skills, Thompson Greenspon, and VLP Financial Advisors.&nbsp;</p> <p>Dan Lash, BS Economics ’97, partner and advisor with VLP Financial Advisors, says serving as a corporate sponsor “allowed VLP to continue our support of the University with a broader focus on assisting the community.”</p> <blockquote><p>“Participating in the Humanitarian Happy Hour event was one of the most rewarding experiences I have been through during my time in the Costello College of Business."&nbsp;<br>—Grant Goodson, a senior business management student&nbsp;</p> </blockquote> <p>Hendricks considers a project such as this an extension of her involvement with <a href="https://wellbeing.gmu.edu/kindness/" title="Mason Chooses Kindness | 91">Mason Chooses Kindness</a>, also supported by the Costello College of Business at large.&nbsp;</p> <p>“What I enjoyed most was seeing the ways the George Mason community upholds the pillars of Mason Chooses Kindness: education and awareness, positive connections, sense of belonging, courageous advocacy, compassion, and well-being,” says Zareena Khan, assistant director of student well-being programs. “It reminded me that connecting intentionally with one another and giving back to our communities are simple but impactful ways that we can enrich our lives and the lives of others.”</p> <p>Hendricks is not new to using her class to bring good to the world. It was also his last as he is slated to retire at the end of the fall semester.</span></p> <p><span>The benefits of the meeting flowed both ways as&nbsp;Fairfax County Executive Bryan Hill, who admitted to earning his MPA from a school other than George Mason, used his time at the podium to highlight the career possibilities available in local government—particularly within Fairfax County.
