Four years at 91’s College of Engineering and Computing gave her the scientific training to move toward that path.

Zarin Musarrat Niladree works in a lab at 91. Photo provided.

Niladree graduates in May with a degree in bioengineering, pre-health concentration, and is on her way to medical school. The path ran through three research labs and one clarifying question she kept returning to: Who actually needs this, and does it work for them?

The answer felt most urgent in Professor Remi Veneziano’s lab, where she served as co-construction lead on a smart microneedle patch designed for patients with chronic wounds—elderly patients, people with disabilities, people managing wound care alone without reliable help. The patch used UV light to trigger targeted drug release at the wound site, sparing patients repeated invasive treatments. Niladree built the electrical system from the ground up: UV LED strips, an Arduino Nano, circuit boards she soldered and resoldered through months of setbacks, components that behaved differently assembled than they did on paper.

“It was not just building a device for the sake of building one,” she said. “We were trying to create something that could help people feel less overwhelmed by their own care.”

What the lab taught her was the distance between a working prototype and a patient who actually benefits from it—and how much stands between the two. That gap is what drew her toward the Dartmouth Water Filtration Project, where the engineering problem was inseparable from the community it was meant to serve.

She joined expecting to redesign a filter for communities in Guatemala. What the project actually taught her was harder to systematize: that engineering solutions deployed to real communities require humility before they require hardware. Safety concerns, sustainability questions, and guidance from faculty pushed the team away from a point-of-use filter toward broader water-system treatment. That pivot frustrated her at first, but then clarified something she carried forward.

“Just because we can design something does not automatically mean it is the best or safest solution,” she said. “Sometimes that means pausing, rethinking, and choosing the option that is safer and more useful for the people who will actually use it.”

Her role as a teaching assistant for BENG 360 Biomedical Imaging, a course she had struggled through, confirmed what her research had been building toward. She realized that helping a frustrated student finally understand a problem wasn’t so different from what she imagined doing in an examination room—meeting someone in their confusion, explaining clearly, making them feel less alone.

This orientation—science as a form of care, not just capability—is what she’s taking to medical school. The kind of physician she wants to become is already recognizable: the one who makes the patient feel safe.

What George Mason gave her was scientific fluency. What it kept showing her, through every lab and every student she taught, was that fluency alone was not enough.

Note: This story was written by Tiffany Boggs, Student Media, and edited by Chelsea Xu, UL Marketing and Communications. the community together for a carnival with games, rides, food, and music. This year’s concert headliner was hip-hop artist JT from City Girls, with support from indie pop band The Aces. The event—sponsored by University Life’s Student Involvement unit and free for George Mason students, faculty, and staff—occurs every April before final exams. This year, the festival attracted a record-setting 7,420 attendees.

This year’s Mason Day also included activities developed and implemented by students taking the event management course TOUR 221 Event Implementation and Evaluation, expanding the long-running event with a vital student perspective.

President Washington (center in green) catches up with students at Mason Day. This year, attendees could decorate tote bags, make stuff-a-fluff plushies, and line up for carnival rides, while those who needed a quieter moment could step into an expanded sensory tent and reset with fidget toys and puzzles.

Lauren Long, executive director of Student Involvement, said accessibility was one of the major goals of the event. “In addition to the traditions students have come to expect, this year’s attendees experienced a Silent Disco, expanded Low Stimuli and Sensory tents, roaming artists, and a larger vendor fair. While Mason Day has changed over time, the true spirit that started 61 years ago to present live music and bring students together in community is still the center point of the event today.”

Photo by Andani Munkaila/Office of University Branding

Senior Bethel Tessera, a psychology major, made it to Mason Day for the third time, and brought her friend Lily Velapatino up from Richmond for the occasion. After a busy semester taking 18 credits, Tessera said the timing couldn’t have been better. The two started the afternoon decorating tote bags in the sun and decompressing after a long semester. Velapatino, taking it all in as a first-time visitor, said she was “very jealous of all the free activities and fun rides Mason Day has to offer.”

Vendors are also a big part of Mason Day, many of them students or alumni. Among the vendors this year was Hanieh Faani, a fine arts senior debuting her small business featuring handmade Iranian art, embroideries, and prints. The business is a family affair: Faani’s mother, Mahina Rajaei, a master’s student in counseling at George Mason, was there alongside her. A third generation will soon attend Mason as well—Rajaei’s granddaughter is set to enroll in fall 2026 to study physics.

“The proximity to our home and the tolerant environment makes Mason such an anchor in our family,” Faani said.

The rain didn't diminish the enthusiasm of the crowds at the evening concert. personal pitches, ask questions, and receive individualized feedback. Photo provided

Hosted by 91’s Mason Autism Support Initiative (MASI) and the Executive Functioning Program (EFP) in Disability Services, in collaboration with University Career Services (UCS), the event gave students space to rehearse their personal pitches, ask questions, and receive individualized feedback.

Employers from organizations including Fairfax County Government, the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, Melwood, BroadFutures, and the Organization for Autism Research’s Hire Autism Program met students and offered insight into job opportunities, workplace culture, and accessibility. The focused, calm, and conversational tone made it clear that this was not simply a recruitment event; it was an environment engineered for confidence-building.

MASI and EFP created the fair in response to a familiar challenge: large crowded networking events often obscure rather than illuminate opportunity, particularly for neurodivergent students. Here, students moved through a sequence of core skills, including introducing themselves, articulating employment goals, presenting a résumé, and posing targeted questions. Employers responded with candid, practical feedback rooted in real workplace expectations.

The approach worked. Sharon Toda, EFP assistant director, noted that 60% of students reported encountering no obstacles during their interactions—an uncommon statistic for a group that frequently names career fairs as particularly stressful events. For those who did describe challenges, such as uncertainty about how to introduce themselves or what information employers might want, staff emphasized that these moments are exactly the point: The fair exists to make the unfamiliar navigable.

Employer enthusiasm matched student engagement. According to Toda, several employer partners were “pleasantly surprised by the university’s initiative to support individuals with disabilities,” and one partner was motivated enough by the experience to help recruit an additional employer for future fairs. Their participation reflected a shared understanding that access and preparation are not separate goals but mutually reinforcing ones.

First piloted in the spring 2025 semester, the MASI/EFP mini career fair continues to evolve through close collaboration with employer partners and Ann Garner, a Career Services advisor. Participants also had access to a preparation workshop, led by UCS career advisor Zakeyah Frazier.

The fair echoes George Mason’s broader mission of inclusion and creates yet another path for student success. By shaping the environment around students’ needs and engaging employers committed to accessible hiring, MASI and EFP turned a standard career interaction into something intentional and empowering. The mini career fair is set to return in April 2026.

To learn more about Disability Services’ programming and events, visit ds.gmu.edu.

Related Stories

Mason Square flexed its neighborhood spirit at Clarendon FitFest

May 21, 2026

Making space for well-being during finals

May 18, 2026

Graduation spotlight series: Doing it all at once

May 12, 2026

Graduation spotlight series: Mile by mile, running for success

May 12, 2026

Mason Day 2026 marks 61 years of community and tradition

April 30, 2026

Learn about upcoming Career Events

Topics

Topics

Students

inclusive excellence

University Career Services

job fair

workforce

University Life

Tue, 06 Jan 2026 21:01:51 +0000 ckearney 344876 at From rugby pitch to classroom, this Patriot is redefining what success means to him /news/2025-12/rugby-pitch-classroom-patriot-redefining-what-success-means-him From rugby pitch to classroom, this Patriot is redefining what success means to him ckearney <time datetime="2025-12-08T11:53:54-05:00" title="Monday, December 8, 2025 - The professors cared about my opinion, which was uplifting.”

Over time, Dacey uncovered strengths he hadn’t seen in himself. “I did not know that my critical analysis was as good as it is,” he said. One of his favorite assignments was a critical analysis of The Lord of the Rings, a series he has loved for years. Approaching it from a scholarly angle, dissecting its metaphors, themes, and world-building, was “challenging and energizing,” he said.

That shift, he realized, was transformative.
