Deloitte internship helps Costello student shape her future in consulting Katelynn C Hipolito Tue, 09/01/2026 - 10:37

Interning at Deloitte was on Iman Chaudhry’s radar ever since she entered the Costello College of Business at 91�� as a freshman and learned about the major firms in the area. As the president of the Mason Consulting Group, she’s tuned in to what’s happening at Costello and the opportunities available.

Promoted heavily across campus, Deloitte’s discovery internship program immediately caught Chaudhry's eye, especially because she had previously participated in a case competition with the firm.

“I always tell everyone that a cold application isn’t usually enough,” she says. “You have to be intentional about networking; it's really about building genuine relationships.” She put in the legwork before ever submitting her application by networking with recruiters and partners at Deloitte, many of whom were Costello alumni. Because of that, she felt few nerves as she began her internship, already familiar with many of the people working at the firm.

Joining about two dozen other students in the discovery internship program, Chaudhry was assigned to do strategy consulting work for a national security defense client. Mixed in with her rotations across different workflows, meetings, research tasks, and other deep work were plenty of opportunities to connect with senior leadership, as well as social events to bond with fellow interns.

Even though she's only halfway through her undergraduate education, Chaudhry has pushed herself to take both her academics and career development seriously. Working in small groups and presenting to audiences, both in the classroom and in her extracurriculars, prepared her for the intern work she did this past summer. She continues to be excited to see how the skills she developed in the classroom translate to the real world. “The tools may change, but the growth mindset remains the same.”

Witnessing how fast technology is evolving in the workplace has encouraged Chaudhry to pursue more courses in ethics and AI and other emerging tools. Interning at Deloitte has also made her contemplate the specific field of consulting that she wants to pursue. "I had a lot of fun this summer, and it's given me a lot to think about where I want to take my career," she reflects.

In the shorter term, Chaudhry is eager to leverage her experiences to implement new ideas in operating and optimizing the consulting work she oversees as president of the Mason Consulting Group.

Iman Chaudhry found her discovery internship experience to be immensely educational, informing her about the areas she wants to study further and the career direction she wants to take. As a junior studying management information systems at Costello, she looks forward to future internships where she can continue to expand her knowledge and explore her career possibilities.

A year after graduating from 91��'s Schar School of Policy and Government with a degree in public administration, Dylan Morse found himself a candidate for Vermont House of Representatives.

Dylan Morse, BS Public Administration ’25, is running for state representative in Vermont.

He had been working in local elections and writing on his Substack page, which attracted some attention with readers who encouraged him to get involved in local politics.

“I wrote for fun to keep up with the habits I built at the Schar School, researching and writing,” he said. “It started to grow and I had some people reach out to me and that lit a spark in me. [Getting into politics] has always been a goal of mine, but I didn't imagine that I would do it so soon.”

Morse filed for his candidacy in May and won the August 11 primary for his seat representing the Windsor-1 district, which includes his hometown of Hartland, as well as the towns of Windsor and West Windsor. (The general election is November 3.) He spent his summer knocking on doors and attending all kinds of community events meeting and engaging with voters. Exhausting work to be sure.

“It’s one of the hardest things I've ever done because it takes a lot of work to do it right,” he said. “It's a really big time commitment and I've had to make some sacrifices elsewhere in my life. There's always the constant stress in the back of your mind, Am I doing enough?”

When he meets with constituents, Morse sometimes faces skepticism given his young age. He knows that experience is a valuable part of governing and he stresses his internship experience at the Schar School, which included working for both Vermont’s Governor Phil Scott and Senator Peter Welch.

“One of the main jobs from both of those internships was talking with constituents and trying to help them, and that’s been the entire campaign this summer,” he said. “My job is to talk to voters and learn what’s working for them, what isn't working for them.”

More often than not, Morse has been welcomed on the campaign trail.

“It's seen as a great positive that a young person is getting involved,” he said. “People are excited when I come to their door and can offer a different perspective. It's one way I’ve differentiated myself from other candidates.”

Morse’s platform focuses on securing a Vermont where everyday people can live their lives comfortably, which is getting harder to do because of costs and lack of affordable housing.

“I’m a ninth-generation Vermonter,” he said. “My family is a 9-to-5 working family. I see and hear that that life is getting harder to do. I want to do all I can to make that not be the case.”

He credits his family for instilling his passion for public service and a desire to give back, a commitment he continued to develop through his studies and internships at the Schar School. The son of a career firefighter, Morse remembers his father teaching fire safety or picking up people in an ambulance.

“I saw the meaning behind being an active part of the town and the community,” he said. “I want to chip into that. I don't want to do a job just to earn a paycheck. I want to do something that means something.”

At first glance, it might seem unusual for a graphic design major to intern at a car dealership. But for 91�� rising senior Rayna Roades, her role as a marketing operations intern at Pohanka Automotive has revealed a strong connection between the creative skills she’s learned in the classroom and the work she’s doing in the professional world.

One of her major projects with the company has been putting together Pohanka’s annual student yearbook, an assignment she said connects directly to what she learned in her AVT 313 Publication Design course.

“In my publication design course, I learned a lot about how to set up a good book. We did a cookbook and a magazine, both of which were really instrumental in preparing me to set up the yearbook,” said Roades.

At Pohanka Automotive, Roades is gaining hands-on experience in marketing, publication design, and photography. Roades said the internship has strengthened the creative and technical skills she’s developed at George Mason and reinforced one of the biggest lessons she has learned so far: Growth often comes through trial and error.

“It's a lot of hard work, but it’s fun. Now, I'm confident in my ability to do things like set up a media program, quick color grading, and artistically capture a story through a video or one still image,” she said.

Her contributions to the company’s marketing efforts include filming and editing content, auditing websites, and contacting customers.

Roades, who has a minor in studio art, also contributed to event planning for Pohanka, coordinating the company’s Fourth of July parade entry in Leesburg, Virginia. She managed details such as costumes, decorations, vehicle assignments, and communication with parade organizers.

Beyond the technical work, Roades said the internship has given her a better understanding of workplace culture. She travels between dealerships to photograph and interview fellow interns for the company yearbook.

During her breaks, she visits different parts of the company and talks with employees across brands, including Acura, Lexus, and Chevrolet, to better understand the organization and create more authentic content. Interns also meet weekly at the Pohanka Automotive Operations Center to learn from one another and share updates on their work.

Roades said George Mason faculty played an important role in preparing her for the opportunity as she was recommended for the internship by a professor and advisor, who helped her build the foundation she now uses every day.

“Rayna is an exceptional and imaginative student who consistently demonstrated professionalism, dedication, and creativity,” said School of Art adjunct faculty member Peter Kery, who taught Roades’s Publication Design course.

“She approaches every task with careful attention to craft and detail, particularly in image-making and illustration. Based on her performance in class, I believe she has the potential to become a strong leader who can think critically and take initiative,” he said.

Roades works as a media lab specialist in Mason Innovation Exchange (MIX) and hopes to expand her content creation skills by contributing to the team's social media efforts. She also works at the NOVA Fab Lab teaching people how to use fabrication technology.

“George Mason and my professors have done such a great job of making sure that I can transition from college into the work industry,” Roades said.

For other students preparing for internships and careers, Roades offers simple advice: “We have a saying in sales: Selling is 90% emotion and 10% facts. Be nice to people.”

Although she was born in the United States, 91�� senior Meriam Belainass feels a special connection to Morocco thanks to extended family and friends who live there. She’s also had two summer internships there.

Belainass, who visits Morocco every year, recently interned at Clinique Al Madina in Casablanca.

“I’ve always wanted to be in the medical field,” said Belainass, who is majoring in bioengineering in the College of Engineering and Computing. “Interning in Morocco has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I also interned at a Moroccan clinic last summer and the fact that I'm able to continue to contribute to my community in this way is really special.”

During her visit last summer, Belainass completed a biomedical engineering internship at Sheikh Zaid Hospital in Casablanca, where she gained experience with medical equipment and hospital operations.

At the clinic, Belainass observed preventive maintenance procedures and ensured devices were safe and ready for patient care by inspecting, maintaining, and troubleshooting medical equipment, including magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography scanners, ultrasound systems, patient monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, and electrocardiogram machines.

“This opportunity has strengthened my technical ability, broadened my perspective on health care, and reinforced my commitment to improving patient care through medical technology,” said Belainass, who plans to complete her master’s in George Mason’s Bachelor’s to Accelerated Master's Program.

In addition to working with hospital equipment, she also gained experience with beauty center technologies such as Derma View, Alma IQ, high intensity focused ultrasounds, and Pico Laser systems.

Belainass, who has a concentration in imaging and devices, said the internship has given her insight into a different health care system while strengthening both her technical and professional skills.

“During this internship, I helped ensure medical equipment is safe, accurate, and reliable, supporting health care professionals in providing effective patient care,” said Belainass. “The skills I'm developing are invaluable, and I know I’ll take them with me throughout my medical career.”

Belainass’s greatest strength is her genuine passion for learning, according to her mentor and supervisor at Clinique Al Madina, biomedical engineer Fatima Zahra Fakhrouni.

“Meriam adapted to the clinical environment really quickly,” said Fakhrouni. “Her commitment to understanding the equipment and taking on new challenges was particularly impressive. This kind of mindset will undoubtedly serve her well throughout her career.”

Belainass continues to build an impressive academic and professional resumé outside of this internship as well.

Before transferring to George Mason, she earned two associate degrees from Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA)—one in architecture and one in engineering. She’s currently on track to complete a third associate degree in computer science from NOVA this fall.

“I was surprised by how much biomedical engineers contribute behind the scenes to keep medical equipment functioning safely and efficiently,” she said. “I learned that attention to detail, teamwork, and preventive maintenance are essential for ensuring patient safety and reliable health care technology.”

For students interested in a similar path, Belainass encourages them to seek out as many hands-on opportunities as they can.

“Take advantage of internships and study-abroad opportunities,” she said. “Hands-on experience is one of the best ways to build technical skills, gain confidence, and prepare for a career in biomedical engineering.”

“Being in class with our participants reminds me of the pure joy of dance,” said School of Dance senior Emma Simons of her time interning with Dance for PD®.

Dance for PD is a movement-based class for people with Parkinson’s disease, which offers physical benefits to the participants and helps reduce the social isolation associated with the neurological disease. 91��’s School of Dance has offered the national program, administered by George Mason arts partner Mark Morris Dance Group, in Northern Virginia since 2021.

When Simons and fellow dance major Asiah Moore interned with Dance for PD, each took a different approach to her work, a practice encouraged by George Mason adjunct Elizabeth Spatz, a certified Dance for PD teaching artist.

Moore concentrated on increasing internal awareness of Dance for PD at George Mason, creating strategic social media content and encouraging her peers in the School of Dance to engage more robustly with the program.

She recruited fellow students to attend the classes and perform brief dance selections for class participants. After these showings, participants had the opportunity to ask the students questions about the pieces and their experiences overall.

“I wanted to combine these worlds and give the community a chance to see inside the work we do,” said Moore. “When [the participants] have a chance to see pieces beforehand, they might come to a performance, [then] they come in feeling like they’re already part of this world because they know us.”

In her work, Simons focused on external communications, building on previous interns’ research into local medical practices, retirement communities, and businesses where patients and caregivers might be looking for the resource that Dance for PD provides.

Simons made cold calls and sent out emails, aiming to bring more people to George Mason’s Fairfax Campus. But as she spent more time in class, she noticed that people’s hesitation melted inside the studio, and she decided to pivot in her approach.

“It’s so much joy to be in the room with the participants, and I knew words can’t bring people in as much as the movement itself could,” said Simons.

Simons and Moore joined forces and started reaching out to administrators at various retirement communities to organize in-person trial classes on-site. The class they offered with Westminster at Lake Ridge was very well attended.

“There were staff members who said ‘We’re just here to watch’ at the beginning of the session, but within five minutes, they were dancing and smiling and moving. It has this power for connecting people,” said School of Dance Associate Professor and George Mason alumna Shaun Boyle D’Arcy, MFA Dance '21, who helped bring the program to George Mason.

Simons and Moore graduated from George Mason in May with BFAs in dance and look forward to building on their experiences with Dance for PD. They both plan to perform professionally and are looking for companies that value community engagement and service.

Spatz said these internships can lead to jobs. “One of our former interns was hired by a company that was impressed with her [Dance for PD] experience,” said Spatz. “It’s so valuable for our students to see the different ways dance applies to people’s lives.”

This research supports the Grand Challenge Initiative's goal of improving human health, well-being, and preparedness.

91�� senior Nathaniel Socks has had two internships in his field, and he credits a course he took his sophomore year with his advisor Jane Walker for helping him get them.

“I took Jane [Walker]’s course CONF 314 Career Development Seminar, which was so helpful because we created resumes and [practiced] interviews,” said Socks, who is majoring in conflict analysis and resolution in the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution.

“I was able to get an internship with the Department of State that spring, and then also got accepted to do this Pathways internship, which could turn into a full-time job, so I’d say her class worked exactly how it was supposed to for me,” he said.

The Pathways Internship program is designed to provide students with opportunities to explore federal careers while being paid for the work performed. Socks is interning with the General Services Administration (GSA), a federal agency that works on procurement and acquisition services, and after completing a year-long internship, he’s eligible to convert to a full-time position through competitive hiring.

“As an intern here, I've been providing overall general support for different projects, as well as creating a newsletter for the team on travel industry updates. A big part of what my office does is work with travel management companies to get them contracted with different agencies,” said Socks.

Rather than zeroing in on one optimal career path, Walker, director of Undergraduate Student Services for the Carter School, said she uses the Career Development Seminar to help students expand their career focus and consider a minimum of three options.

“Conflict is everywhere, our students can apply their degrees to many different career paths—we want them to fully explore those opportunities within the class,” said Walker.

“Nathaniel is an excellent student, but more importantly, he is a hard worker that approaches life with humility—these are traits that will take him far in his career as they are valued and important for advancement and success,” she said.

For his previous internship at the Department of State, Socks was a staffer for the front office at the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.

“As a staffer, we did everything from drafting department documents to pushing papers to get cleared by heads of leadership. I would say that, because of everything going on in the Middle East, that position was a little bit more hectic and versatile, [whereas] this job with GSA and my responsibilities are more consistent,” said Socks.

Socks, who is working on a minor in intelligence studies, said it was originally his goal to work in international relations, but his internship at GSA has opened up the possibility of working in the travel industry.

“The GSA also contracts to the Department of State, so there’s still possibilities of me being able to get more experience with international affairs there,” he said.

Socks is set to graduate from George Mason in December and hopes to continue his journey at GSA.

“I didn't always feel confident in these different positions, especially with them being federal agencies, but the biggest lesson I’ve learned is to just be confident in your abilities,” said Socks.

This spring, 91�� senior Elizabeth Cheang landed an internship that provided her with a unique opportunity to research COVID-19 cases and use public data sets to discover virus hot spots in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

The health informatics major started in January as an intern with Lluvia Health, a start-up company that focuses on the accessibility and transparency of health care. She worked remotely on a weekly basis and plans to complete her internship on April 27.

“Throughout her internship, Elizabeth was very much a self-reliant intern who was intrigued with learning everything about start-up companies,” said Katherine Westpheling, adjunct faculty and course instructor for HAP 498 in the Department of Health Administration and Policy in the College of Health and Human Services. “She joined a small start-up team of engineers and learned quickly how to be integrated into that culture.”

“For the main project for my internship, I had collected COVID-19 cases by ZIP code specifically within the DMV area,” said Cheang. She used that data to find relationships within the certain sample populations. The result of this project was an interactive map that would show which areas were hot spots or had the most cases.

Cheang gathered data by diligently checking public data portals where data is released by Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Once she got the data, she organized and imported the information into Lluvia Health's database.

“I highly recommend working with a start-up business,” said Cheang. “There’s comfortability, room to expand, and it’s an open-minded environment.”

Cheang’s mentor, Ricardo Rodriguez, founder of Lluvia Health, emphasized the need to make health care more “shoppable” so that consumers can make informed decisions about products and services.

Cheang found improving the user experience, or UX design, to be the one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

“User Experience Design is something I did not know anything about going into this internship,” said Cheang, whose degree concentration is in health informatics with a minor in information technology. As a result of her recent exploration of data visualization, she’s sold on UX design and plans to consider the career path post-graduation.

Cheang said the learning environment at Mason gave her the ability to make connections with peers within her area of study. She also learned the importance of collaborating efficiently and building meaningful relationships, “because that dynamic can help bridge a potential opportunity in the future,” she added.
