The Patriots also hosted a postseason game for just the third time ever, while Blair-Lewis also earned the 400th victory of her head coaching career. George Mason women’s basketball also saw its highest attended home game ever, packing EagleBank Arena with 4,123 fans vs. Dayton on December 31, 2025.</p> <p><span>“I am incredibly grateful to President Gregory Washington and Athletic Director Marvin Lewis for their trust and belief in our vision,” said Blair-Lewis. “This extension is not just about me—it reflects the hard work, dedication, and culture we have built together. We have achieved historic milestones, but I truly believe our best days are still ahead. We are redefining what's possible at the mid-major level, here at George Mason.”</span></p> <p>The 2024-25 season marked a breakthrough year for the Patriots under Blair-Lewis, as George Mason captured its first Atlantic 10 Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth in program history. The team finished with a school-record 27 victories, including the program’s first-ever 11-1 start and back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time. George Mason also achieved its highest-ever NET ranking at No. 40.</p> <p>Blair-Lewis has engineered one of the nation’s most impressive program turnarounds since arriving in Fairfax in 2021. After inheriting a team that won just three games in 2020-21, she tripled the Patriots’ win total in her first season and snapped a 24-game conference losing streak. In 2022-23, George Mason recorded its first winning season since 2017-18 and advanced to the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals. The following season, the Patriots posted 23 wins and earned a postseason berth to the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament before breaking through with a championship campaign in 2024-25.</p> <p>During her tenure at George Mason, Blair-Lewis has coached numerous Atlantic 10 award winners and all-conference selections, including back-to-back Most Improved Players, the league’s Rookie of the Year, multiple All-Conference performers, and All-Defensive Team honorees.&nbsp;</p> <p>She has also earned national recognition, including consecutive selections as a finalist for the Kathy Delaney-Smith Mid-Major Coach of the Year award by Her Hoop Stats and recognition as the 2024-25 VaSID Coach of the Year.</p> <p>Prior to George Mason, Blair-Lewis spent 13 seasons at Bethune-Cookman, where she led the Wildcats to four Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season titles, a MEAC Tournament championship, and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2019. She is a four-time MEAC Coach of the Year and has more than 400 career victories across 27 seasons as a head coach.</p> <p>“I am excited to continue leading this program, developing exceptional young women and making the George Mason community proud,” said Blair-Lewis. “The future is bright, and we're just getting started.”&nbsp;</p> <p>With this extension, George Mason reaffirms its commitment to the continued growth and national prominence of the women’s basketball program under Blair-Lewis’ leadership.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="e4946c5b-6e34-4b7c-ba06-89104a489e5f"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://gomason.com/"> <p class="cta__title">Jump into George Mason Athletics <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="8206cd8b-9cea-4599-86e3-0a0e389ba7e7" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><br>&nbsp;</p> <hr> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="e373ce06-bfd3-4677-8984-25d52074455d" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related Stories</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-d22ac237bcc29c78fe7508b9c03536fe91a995712eb3ba6b13e27223eed2cd94"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-08/patriot-profile-michael-marcus-jr" hreflang="en">Patriot Profile: Michael Marcus Jr.</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">August 28, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-08/meet-mason-nation-rebekah-schmidt" hreflang="en">Meet the Mason Nation: Rebekah Schmidt </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">August 11, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-06/patriot-profile-mia-arevalo-delcid" hreflang="en">Patriot Profile: Mia Arevalo-Delcid </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">June 30, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-06/northwest-federal-credit-union-and-george-mason-athletics-expand-partnership-advance" hreflang="en">Northwest Federal Credit Union and George Mason Athletics expand partnership to advance student financial wellness on and off the court </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">June 18, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-06/vanessa-blair-lewiss-contract-extended-through-2031-32" hreflang="en">Vanessa Blair-Lewis’s contract extended through 2031-32</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">June 15, 2026</div></div></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="dd2f5b5a-5e6c-4b27-ac22-0ad92055aa8f" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><hr> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><em>This content appears in the Fall 2026 print edition of the Mason Spirit Magazine with the title "Skinn and Blair-Lewis earn contract extensions through 2031-32."</em></p> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="465840af-8e16-47de-86e7-e40d92ac09fe"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="/spirit-magazine"> <p class="cta__title">More from Mason Spirit Magazine <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> Mon, 15 Jun 2026 16:27:23 +0000 ckearney 345914 at Tony Skinn earns contract extension through 2031-32 season /news/2026-06/tony-skinn-earns-contract-extension-through-2031-32-season <span>Tony Skinn earns contract extension through 2031-32 season</span> <span><span>ckearney</span></span> <span><time datetime="2026-06-11T13:06:20-04:00" title="Thursday, June 11, 2026 - Her work requires complex operational planning across three countries, 16 stadiums, and 48 participating national teams.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>Her journey began when she arrived at George Mason as a student-athlete. After watching the Patriots win the 1985 NCAA Women's Soccer National Championship, a landmark achievement that helped put the university on the national map, Kosco's interest in George Mason grew. She ultimately chose George Mason not only for its growing soccer program, but also for the opportunity to live on campus, compete at the Division I level, and be part of a diverse university community.</span></p> <p><span>"Mason felt like home," Kosco said. When she enrolled, the university was a smaller regional institution, a world of difference compared to the George Mason of today—a leading public university and the largest public research university in Virginia.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>"I've loved watching Mason grow," Kosco said. "The university has become nationally respected while still maintaining the sense of community that made it special."</span></p> <p><span>Kosco credits her time at Mason with shaping both her professional career and her personal outlook. As a communication major, she developed skills that continue to guide her today as she works on the international stage with FIFA.</span></p> <p><span>"Mason taught me how to communicate, connect with others, and understand different perspectives," Kosco said. "Those experiences prepared me for opportunities I never imagined."</span></p> <p><span>Now preparing for a summer surrounded by the world's top soccer nations, Kosco still carries lessons learned as a Patriot. She points to the culture of hard work and perseverance instilled during her time at Mason as a driving force behind her success.</span></p> <p><span>"You don't strive to be the smartest or the best," Kosco said. "You just keep working hard and don't give up."</span></p> <p><span><strong>Fun Fact:</strong> During Kosco’s time with the Patriots, she was a teammate of Kelley (Harlow) Pulisic, a standout defender in George Mason’s women's soccer program and the mother of current USMNT star Christian Pulisic. Their careers shaped generations of student-athletes, coaches, and staff, leaving an enduring imprint on the university community. Carolyn passed away in 2025, but her warmth and influence remain woven into the fabric of the program she helped nurture for nearly half a century.</p> <p>Carolyn Marsh began her career at George Mason in December 1975 as a sports information assistant. She soon became executive assistant to the men’s basketball program, serving eight head coaches over the decades. From John Linn to Dave Paulsen, she was a steady and trusted presence. Known for her compassion and personal touch, Carolyn built lifelong relationships with student-athletes, many of whom stayed in contact long after graduation. She often described her role simply: caring for the players like a mother.</p> <p>Jay Marsh’s journey began as a student-athlete. After serving in the U.S. Army, he enrolled at George Mason, earning a degree in business administration in 1973 while playing two seasons of men’s basketball. After graduation, he briefly worked in construction and coached part-time before returning full-time in 1976. Over nearly five decades, he became synonymous with athletics operations, overseeing facilities, events, and fundraising while ensuring a first-class experience for athletes and fans alike.</p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/2026-05/jwb_051426-gmu-vip-273-final.jpg?itok=JdJkfVId" width="560" height="425"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Mason Medal awardee Jay Marsh (right) with the student speaker Saniya Darediya before the ceremony. His expertise extended beyond campus, particularly in managing the Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament for many years. He also played pivotal roles in historic moments, including the 1985 women’s soccer national championship and the Patriots’ 2006 Final Four run.</p> <p>The Marshes’ generosity includes an endowed scholarship for basketball student-athletes and support for locker room renovations. The men’s basketball film room now bears Carolyn’s name, honoring her quiet but profound impact. Married since 1967, they built a life intertwined with George Mason. Their legacy—rooted in loyalty, service, and love for the university—continues to inspire the Mason community today.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="f23db1f3-8650-42a7-b360-26df9916cba6"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://gomason.com/"> <p class="cta__title">George Mason Athletics <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="9fd941fe-273f-47a1-9e91-88c8955c6e21" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>&nbsp;</p> <hr> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="3512aa22-4610-40ff-8ab2-81676f1caf1d" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related Stories</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-672d2fdb6074ac1a5c7515d4b860c30c41d51b1a11adeffc0ff2bd364f7a463f"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-09/george-masons-first-grand-challenge-exchange-day-builds-connections-across-disciplines" hreflang="en">George Mason’s first Grand Challenge Exchange Day builds connections across disciplines</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">September 16, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-09/george-mason-showcases-data-center-research-leadership-japanese-delegation" hreflang="en">George Mason showcases data center research leadership to Japanese delegation</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">September 15, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-09/george-mason-alum-rhea-seehorn-wins-emmy-portrayal-carol-appletvs-pluribus" hreflang="en">George Mason alum Rhea Seehorn wins Emmy for portrayal of Carol in AppleTV’s Pluribus</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">September 15, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-09/george-mason-partners-oxford-based-treq-bring-first-open-architecture-quantum" hreflang="en">George Mason partners with Oxford-based TreQ to bring the first open-architecture quantum computing system to Virginia</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">September 2, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-08/new-nea-grants-support-veterans-and-arts-initiative-programs-fall" hreflang="en">New NEA Grants Support Veterans and the Arts Initiative Programs This Fall </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">August 31, 2026</div></div></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/116" hreflang="en">Campus News</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/2466" hreflang="en">Athletics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/5411" hreflang="en">philanthropy</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/18011" hreflang="en">Mason Medal</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/481" hreflang="en">Graduation</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/18016" hreflang="en">Spring Commencement</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div> </div> </div> Thu, 14 May 2026 16:17:00 +0000 ckearney 345836 at Wrap up for April 30 BOV meeting /news/2026-05/wrap-april-30-bov-meeting <span>Wrap up for April 30 BOV meeting </span> <span><span>Katarina Benson</span></span> <span><time datetime="2026-05-11T14:52:50-04:00" title="Monday, May 11, 2026 -
