A Legacy Reimagined: Nia Thompson finds her own path at George Mason Katarina Benson Tue, 04/14/2026 - 16:22

Sometimes things just seem to fall into place. That’s what happened for 91�� women’s volleyball freshman player Nia Thompson.

Nia’s mother, Amy Boone Thompson, BS Physical Education '95, was a dual-sport athlete at George Mason in the 1990s, playing both volleyball and basketball. She was a member of the 1994 CAA Championship women’s volleyball team.

Amy said she was initially hesitant to bring up her own experiences at the university when Nia was going through the recruiting process because she wanted her daughter to make her own decisions.

“She really wants to make her own story, and I’m being respectful of that,” Amy said. “I want it to be her experience and let it unfold for her.”

When Nia learned about George Mason’s interest in her, she said felt a strong connection to the program and its people. “I felt really supported by the coaches and players here,” she said. “They really wanted me, and it felt nice.”

Growing up, Nia played many different sports, with tennis being her main focus. However, when her family moved from Colorado to California when she was 13, she discovered a new passion.

In California, volleyball was all the rage, and Nia decided to give it a shot. At first, she joined a lower-level team but quickly fell in love with the sport.

Now, as Nia dons the same colors her mom once did, Amy couldn’t be prouder. Watching her daughter’s success has been a source of immense pride and joy.

Nia’s freshman season has been nothing short of remarkable. She played a pivotal role in helping the team secure a spot in the A-10 Championship Tournament for the first time since 2018 and was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team.

Amy believes that Nia and her teammates have a bright future ahead of them. “With the freshman team we have this year, I think all of us are just so optimistic,” Amy said. “If they can stick together and keep building on what they have, we’re going to keep getting better and better.”

As Nia continues her volleyball journey at George Mason, she carries on a family legacy. While her mom’s experiences and achievements at the university serve as a source of inspiration and motivation, Nia is determined to make her own mark.

“It’s a really good group of girls,” said Nia. “It just all came together.”

91��’s Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) Northern Virginia (NoVa) Node recently received a $150,793 grant from the Virginia Innovation Partnership Authority for “CCI Scholars—High School Experiential Learning Program FY26,” a seven-week high school summer internship program for rising seniors and recent graduates of Northern Virginia public high schools.

The program provides hands-on experiential learning opportunities for high school students with local STEM and cybersecurity industry partners, addressing workforce gaps in the commonwealth.

“Given the gap between the number of cybersecurity-related job openings and the number of skilled graduates, creating opportunities for younger learners to spark that interest is critical,” said Liza Wilson Durant, director of the CCI Northern Virginia Node and associate provost for strategic initiatives and community engagement at George Mason.

CCI is partnering with the Children’s Science Center Lab and STEM programs, operated by the Northern Virginia Science Center Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The organization delivers STEM education at its Fairfax-based museum facility and to schools and community venues across the region and will support program administration for the CCI Scholars program.

“We are proud to collaborate with 91�� in growing the next generation of cybersecurity talent through the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative Internship Program,” said Nene Spivy, Chief Executive Officer at the Northern Virginia Science Center Foundation. “Together we provide students with practical workplace skills and direct exposure to industry and careers that are critical to our nation’s future.”

“The Children’s Science Center is exemplary and has been running high school internship programs for many years. The center understands the challenges younger learners face and provides support to help overcome obstacles,” Wilson Durant said.

The program also acts as a pathway opportunity for the students who get to meet George Mason faculty and learn about the different community engagement opportunities that the university presents.

Students are selected through a competitive process that includes written responses, recommendation letters, transcripts, and in-person interviews conducted by industry professionals and Children’s Science Center staff. Selected students are matched with host organizations such as CGI Federal, ManTech, Leidos, and Chainbridge Solutions.

Before starting their internships, students complete a professional skills bootcamp covering workplace etiquette, time management, teamwork, communication, and public speaking.

Once students are placed, they engage in cybersecurity-focused projects, that include addressing emerging cyber threats related to AI agents and digital twins, investigating cybersecurity incidents in the context of satellites, and expanding the technical capabilities of a host company’s product.

“We don't get a lot of hands-on experience in high school cybersecurity classes, so the opportunity of experiencing a professional workplace environment really intrigued me,” said Sridevi Annamalai, a sophomore cybersecurity student.

For her internship, Annamalai was placed with CGI Federal, a global consulting company for technology and business.

“I was assigned to make a presentation on cybersecurity basics for their nonprofit partners as well as conduct tests for different cybersecurity products,” said Annamalai, who is from Prince William County.

“There was a new product on the market, which they were considering, so I was able to help them compare the products and decide which one the company would invest in,” she said.

Annamalai credits her experience with the CCI Program for helping to prepare her for the courses in George Mason’s cybersecurity program.

“I've grown a lot more confident in myself, and my presentation skills have really improved a lot because of this internship,” said Annamalai.

Experiences such Annamalai’s prepare students for future careers both through technical and professional skills-building, as well as exposing them to the breadth of career opportunities they may not have known existed, said Wilson Durant.

Since its launch in 2021, the program has served 175 students. CCI and the Children’s Science Center are now reconnecting with alumni to track career outcomes and gather feedback.

After taking notice of the growing distrust between the scientific community and the general public, 91�� adjunct professor Jennifer Lewis decided to take action by creating two special topics courses in George Mason’s Environmental Science and Policy Department (ESP)—EVPP 490 Conservation Storytelling and EVPP 490/505 Media Production for Environmental Science and Policy—that teach students how to communicate with the public about science in a way that is captivating, interesting, and easy to understand. All emphasizing the use of story, which is the preferred method to communicate for humans.

Emerging scientists enrolled in these undergraduate/graduate classes to learn how to be better communicators with the public, putting information in context for them so they can be more informed, interested, and take appropriate action.

“Communication skills aren’t traditionally taught in scientific fields, so these courses definitely give students an advantage,” said Lewis, an adjunct professor. “Audiences need to be able to understand the information you’re trying to convey, so I teach my students how to simplify complex ideas so that anybody can understand them.”

Aligned with the Global Education Office, EVPP 490 is cross listed with EVPP, FAVS, and COMM, and is open to students of all majors. The course takes students to Nepal over winter break, giving George Mason students the opportunity to learn directly about global conservation issues, and how to share these stories with the public using visual media. Film topics from past classes include climate impacts in the Himalayas, human–wildlife conflict with growing tiger populations, and the use of endangered elephants as work animals.

U.S. Army veteran Ryan Franks is a senior environmental science major who took both special topics courses with Lewis. While in Nepal, he tested the water quality of the Bagmati River in the heart of Katmandu and created social media and YouTube content about his findings for one of his projects. The river is notorious for its pollution due to the lack of municipal solid waste infrastructure and clean water regulations in the city.

“People who live there rely on this water source, so it was great to be able to address this important issue with cleanup efforts,” said Franks, who is also a certified permaculture designer and master gardener who runs a small homestead garden where he grows his own produce.

“You can inform people that this river has 10 times the acceptable levels of mercury and phthalates, but then to show a picture or video of the river with literal trash floating across the surface and an oily sheen on the water will allow people to absorb that information differently,” said Franks. “Being able to take the skills that [Dr. Lewis] was teaching us, adding that visual element to it, and turning technical research into something that the general public could not only use, but would be genuinely interested in, was really cool.”

Ryan McIntire, MA Environmental Science and Policy ’25, took the media production course in fall 2024. The course implements multiple methods of storytelling, including podcasts, films, editorials, social media, and speaking engagements. 

“I really enjoyed Jen's approach to the course because scientists are expected to be very dry and factual with our communication, so it was nice to be a little more creative. I'd never done that in an academic setting before,” said McIntire, who was a teaching assistant for two years in the ESP Department.

Rachel Kelmartin, BS Biology ’16, is graduating with a masters in ESP with a concentration in Aquatic Ecology in May 2026. Kelmartin’s video projects incorporated her research on recreational fishing catch and release mortality statistics of striped bass.

“A really great way to spread awareness about this issue is social media. It has severely changed how we consume news; people need something bite-sized and easy to comprehend while hitting all the high points, but with these different platforms we can be sure to feature visual media to bridge that gap,” said Kelmartin, a part-time lab technician and Graduate Research Assistant in George Mason’s Freshwater Ecology Laboratory. 

Kelmartin also credits Lewis with showing her how to adjust posting news and research updates on social media when there are shifts in the algorithms.

Many of the projects in Lewis’s courses have lasting impact including the fall 2023 film “Black Peaks” about the climate change impact in Nepal, which was shown at the International Mountain Film Festival and at COP27 in Egypt.

Last fall, what began as a hands-on learning experience in Southeast Asia became a journey that took five 91�� students to the heart of global food policy—and left a mark along the way.

The Mason Korea Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Builders—Seongjun Park, Jaehee Yang, Hyunseo Lee, Damin Jeong, and Taeyeong Kim—first traveled to Laos for the First Lao National Youth Forum 2025, hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations Lao PDR and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry with a theme of climate-resilient and sustainable food systems.

The trip was the culmination of three months of preparation, including virtual consultations with FAO technical experts and collaborative planning with Lao and Chinese youth teams. Notably, Mason Korea was the only institution from Korea invited to co-develop content and co-lead sessions.

The student team led a board game session at the forum, connecting with young changemakers from across the region. They also visited local farms, met young farmers and NAFC College students, and experienced organic agriculture firsthand.

But their journey was only beginning.

The Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) board game the team had developed and launched in Laos was selected as a best-practice case, earning the students an invitation to present at the FAO World Food Forum 2025 in Rome, Italy. Supported by Mason Korea's Career Development Center, the SDGs Builders traveled onward to FAO Headquarters, one of the world's most prominent gatherings of policymakers, researchers, youth leaders, and innovators working to transform global agrifood systems.

“We developed the CSA board game to make climate-smart agriculture more accessible by translating global policy ideas into a practical learning tool,” said Jaehee Yang, who is majoring in global affairs and is president of the SDGs Builders group. “It was incredibly meaningful to see a project our team started with Lao youth grow into something we could share with the global community at FAO Headquarters in Rome.”

The game piloted with Lao youth took center stage at the FAO Food Exhibition, where the team presented their Farm Smart Lao Climate-Smart Agriculture tool to delegates from around the world. They hosted interactive sessions, exchanged ideas with FAO experts and global youth organizations, and joined FAO's official youth podcast to discuss climate-resilient food systems.

From village farms in Laos to the floors of a UN agency in Rome, these five students demonstrated that meaningful contributions to the world's most pressing challenges don't have to wait until after graduation.

This year's FAO program is set to take them to Nepal and then Rome.

Hometown:  Norton, Ohio

91�� graduate student Logan Messer had no shortage of family or friends on hand as he capped his wrestling career at the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Wrestling Championships at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Competing just 40 miles from his hometown, Messer delivered a moment years in the making on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

In his first NCAA Championships appearance, Messer, who graduated with a BS in statistics in 2025 and is now working on a master’s in biostatistics, went 1-2, closing out his senior season where he went 27-8 overall. He finished his career with 102 wins, ranking seventh in George Mason annals, and captured the Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship, earning MAC East Division Wrestler of the Week honors along the way.

“He wasn’t the biggest, the strongest, or the fastest,” Head Coach Frank Beasley said. “He just brought a little bit of everything.”

The Right Fit: Messer’s path to George Mason started with trust. “I ended up at George Mason because of the connection I felt with the coaches right away,” he said. “They made me feel like I was more than just another number, and that meant a lot to me coming out of high school.” After weighing offers from Duke and Cleveland State, Messer chose the Patriots—confident it was the place where he could grow as both a wrestler and a person.

“From day one, he was our leader,” said Beasley.

Wearing Down Opponents: At 174 pounds, Messer built his sport identity as a grinder—someone who embraces the physical and mental demands of every position. “I take pride in wrestling through every position and staying tough for the full match,” he said. His most dangerous weapon was his top game, where he developed a disciplined set of moves that allowed him to control matches and wear down opponents.

Built Back Stronger: After tearing the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his knee during the 2023-24 season, Messer redshirted his junior year—an experience that tested both his patience and resolve. “It was really frustrating because I felt like I was wrestling the best I ever had before the injury happened,” he said. “Having that momentum taken away was tough, but it also made me even more determined.” He returned the following season with renewed focus and something to prove.

Back on the Mat: That determination paid off. After narrowly missing the NCAA Championships the year before, a moment he described as one of the lowest points of his career, Messer came into his final season with one goal. “I felt like I had let a good amount of people down, but I battled back this year,” he said. “I just wanted to leave it all out on the mat.”

That journey came full circle in Cleveland, where roughly 20 to 30 family members, friends, and former teammates filled the stands to cheer him on. “They got to see me win that first match,” he said. “That was definitely one of the best parts of the trip.”

Trusting the Process: For Messer, the defining moment of his career came earlier that postseason—winning the MAC Championship. “It felt like all of the hard work, sacrifice, and tough times had finally paid off,” he said. “It all came together, and it reminded me why I put so much into the sport.” While he admits there is still some frustration about not winning one more match at nationals, it's the larger arc of his career that stands out most.

In His DNA: Athletics have always been part of Messer's fabric. His parents, Ron and Dee, were both college student-athletes at Walsh University—his mom competing in both soccer and softball, and his father in football—and met during their time there. That competitive foundation continues with his younger sister, Alyssa, a high school junior who competes in both basketball and softball, and is still considering her next steps after graduation.

It Had to Be You: Just like his parents, Messer and his wife, Abby Weening, a member of the women’s track and field team, met at George Mason their freshman year. Weening, physical education major, was part of the 2025 indoor track and field A-10 championship team and graduates in May. “From the beginning, there was just a natural connection between us,” Messer said.

Their shared experience as Division I student-athletes deepened that bond. “Being with someone who truly understands the grind, pressure, and commitment that comes with Division I athletics makes a big difference,” he said. “We’re able to support each other in a way that not everyone can.”

The Next Chapter: For Messer, George Mason will always hold a special place, not only for what he accomplished on the mat, but for the life he is building off it. Messer will remain part of the program next year as a volunteer graduate assistant coach, staying close to the sport that has shaped much of his life. “Wrestling has been my whole life,” he said. “I’m happy to pass on my knowledge and my experiences to help get the best out of people.”

Off the mat, he unwinds through fishing and playing video games. Long term, he’s considering a return to Ohio and a career in clinical trials for a pharmaceutical company. “I’d like to coach for a few years before going back,” he said. “But we’ll see where this coaching thing leads.”

Sumeya Gibril is working to turn her personal trauma into a way to help other women overcome their own adversity.

Sumeya Gibril: ‘I had nothing besides faith that I got this.’

The graduating master’s student in the Schar School of Policy and Government at 91�� created a nonprofit last May called the Rise Above & Be Relentless Foundation, a 501c (3) organization that assists women navigating sexual assault and domestic abuse. The support comes as short-term financial assistance, practical education, and a community built on understanding.

Gibril’s foundation is built around the help—especially financial—she didn’t have. As a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault that began in childhood, she remembers waiting for someone to intervene. Eventually she realized, “nobody is coming to save me,” she said. “I didn’t have this foundation when I needed it.”

The inspiration for the charity, she added, “is me.”

Every other month, the organization hosts a financial literacy series, paring practical instruction with direct aid to women in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. The foundation assists women with months of utility payments, child care subsidies, and, for those with military backgrounds, legal support—terrain she knows firsthand.

As a young Army soldier, she pushed assault complaints up the chain of command all the way to Congress, she said, only to realize she was “battling the legal field of the U.S. government and the military I needed outside help. I needed an organization like mine to come in and tell me, this is what you need to do, this is how you protect yourself.”

Born in Eritrea and raised in Alexandria, Virginia, Gibril’s journey to the Schar School began at Northern Virginia Community College before transferring to George Mason and earning a Bachelor of Individualized Study degree in sustainable business in 2023. It took a while to earn the degree, she said, as she balanced studies with care for her young son who is on the autism spectrum. Managing his therapy, school, and the accompanying finances was daunting and isolating; she hopes the foundation can ease that burden for others.

The proud first-generation college student is now in her last semester in the Schar School’s Master of Global Commerce and Policy Program, which combines international relations with business to prepare graduates for a wide range of leadership positions. The program not only informs how she builds the nonprofit, but it also benefits her profession as a licensed customs broker, a position that entails the clearing of imported goods at U.S. borders.

Her studies are paying off, she said, not only in the facts and figures taught by the program’s faculty of scholars and practitioners but also in “just understanding people,” she said. “What do they want? What do they need? What’s motivating them?”

She’s also improved her writing skills at the Schar School. “I used to hate writing,” she said, “and now I love it.”

As with any nonprofit, fundraising is key. Gibril has been working with sponsors and donors and, with her board’s blessing, hosted an inaugural gala and a charity golf tournament, which called for learning the nuts and bolts of putting on a 60-player golf event.

“I had nothing besides faith that I got this,” she said of organizing her first golf tournament. That goes for much of what Gibril is creating.

In August 2025, 91��'s Schar School of Policy and Government launched the National Security and Policy cohort program and welcomed its first group of students to campus. The newest addition to the school’s programmatic offerings, the NSPP offers students a full-time, one-year master’s degree experience with a group of like-minded peers who support and challenge each other’s intellectual growth. The inaugural cohort will graduate in August 2026 with a Master of Public Policy degree with an emphasis on national security.

NSPP students toured the Defense Intelligence Agency and had lunch with Schar School alumni who work there.

“Our cohort students bring a new dynamic to the program,” said NSPP Program Director Justin Gest. “They’re hustlers who have decided to devote more time to their studies to expedite their education and entry into the world of public policy. And perhaps most importantly, they value the community that our MPP program engenders among students.”

The NSPP program pushes boundaries in its exploration of national security, integrating a focus on economic statecraft and transnational crime along with the traditional study of international relations and intelligence. Students take four courses each semester and are trained in the fundamental skills of policy—economic and statistical analysis, program evaluation, and policy communication—while applying these skills to national security problems.

A unique feature of the program combines classroom learning with the Schar School’s expert faculty and a robust co-curricular program that introduces NSPP students to a variety of security-related careers and organizations.

In its inaugural year, cohort programming has included a winter study-abroad session in Brussels, Belgium, to visit NATO Headquarters and the EU Commission; a trip to New York to observe the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty negotiations; a tour of the Defense Intelligence Agency and lunch with Schar School alumni working there; a day on Capitol Hill with the Senate Armed Services Committee; lunch with a former governor of Virginia, a meeting with a member of Congress, and a visit to a security-related think tank led by its CEO.

Students have also met with leaders and managers at the Department of Justice, Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Secret Service, and national security consulting firms and defense contractors.

Elaina Ryan, a member of the first cohort, had taken a summer course at George Mason as an undergraduate student, so she was familiar with “the unique expertise that Schar School faculty bring,” she said.

The small size of the NSPP program also appealed to Ryan. “It’s nice that all of my professors know who I am and could speak to my abilities in the classroom,” she said. “It's also enlightening hearing from the others in my cohort, who bring a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences. We learn from each other as much as we learn from our professors. It also brings more accountability to group projects—everyone goes above and beyond because we have personal relationships with each other and don't want to disappoint.”

Former Ambassador Richard Kauzlarich describes the students in his POGO 750 Energy in a Turbulent World course as dedicated and driven to succeed. “They develop a team-centric approach that is important in making the cohort-based program work,” he said. “I hope the students come away from my class with a strong sense of why energy—the major public policy challenge facing the U.S. and other countries as well—represents a key building block in their national security studies.”

Nikki Forry teaches POGO 646 Policy and Program Evaluation in the NSPP program and has enjoyed teaching the group and observing the close ties they’ve formed. “The small class size allows for more interaction and personalized instruction,” she said. “The cohort approach allows for stronger bonds to be developed between students and these bonds enhance the learning community.”

To round out the program, students meet regularly throughout the year with Schar School Career Development Office staff and develop a tailored plan for securing internships and their first job in the field, along with a framework for continued professional growth.

“The program has repeatedly offered us experiences with networking and also did a mandatory resume review last fall,” said Ryan, who landed an internship at the Niskanen Center think tank. “I spoke with Duane [Bradshaw] and Brian [Bar] at the Career Development Office, and it was their advice that was primarily responsible for landing my current internship.”

Other recent internship placements include the U.S. House of Representatives, the National Conference of State Legislatures, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.

Cohort programs like the NSPP offer students a distinctive educational and professional development experience that they can’t get elsewhere, Forry says.

“The rich curriculum targeting national security provides students with the skills they will need to graduate and find employment,” she said. “The cohort program offers an intensive learning environment beneficial to highly motivated students.”

For 91�� baseball player Evan Blanchard, success isn’t just measured in hits and RBIs. During his internship with Mason Athletics’ marketing department, the third baseman helped design a promotional campaign that brought hundreds of fans—and a surge in attendance—to a men’s basketball rivalry game.

As a senior majoring in sport management, Blanchard needed to complete an internship of at least 400 hours to meet his degree requirements. His interest in sports marketing began with Lily Plizga, associate director of fan engagement and brand strategy in George Mason Athletics. As a student-athlete, Blanchard saw Plizga working tirelessly during games and knew how strong the department was. After a discussion with Plizga, Blanchard decided to fulfill his internship requirement by working with George Mason Athletics’ marketing department.

“The biggest thing is how fast-paced sports environments are," said Blanchard of his internship experience. “You need to be able to handle multiple roles, communicate effectively, and stay organized.”

Some of his core responsibilities included devising marketing plans, which included creating promotional themes, brainstorming giveaway ideas, and emphasizing social media strategy while ensuring all the marketing materials resonated with the different stakeholders, including students, fans, alumni, sponsors, and donors.

On gamedays, Blanchard was responsible for gathering and distributing promotional items, along with running in-game collateral, such as sponsored student competitions and T-shirt tosses.

His internship also required that he manage a special project. Blanchard decided to do a promotion for the men’s basketball program, with the purpose of boosting attendance by 5% at the big in-state rivalry game between George Mason and James Madison University (JMU) scheduled to take place during Thanksgiving break.

The plans involved collaborating with George Mason baseball alumni Danny Hosley and South Trimble, who are currently Savannah Bananas players. The idea was to have Hosley and Trimble participate in a pre-game autograph session, halftime entertainment, and timeout competitions.

Aside from getting people to the game, the goal was to attract a new audience, especially baseball fans, while also cross-promoting men’s basketball and baseball. Since most George Mason students were home for the break, the target audience for this promotion also included kids and families in the area.

Blanchard began preparing at the start of the fall 2025 semester, with weekly goals to keep on track. This included reaching out to both Hosley and Trimble and coordinating with the Masonettes, marketing staff, and the department leadership. He also contacted various baseball and softball clubs to coordinate group sales and designed autograph cards for fans, along with additional promotional graphics for the event.

"As an intern, you have value, but you still have to prove yourself," he said. “Preparation was key, and I made sure everything was well planned and gathered feedback from everyone involved."

On the big day, both the marketing department and Blanchard were eager to see whether their planning was successful. The results speak for themselves:

61.1% attendance increase since the last time George Mason played a home game over the Thanksgiving recess
1,499 attendees above the 2023-24 yearly attendance average (39.8%)
19.7% attendance increase since last home game versus JMU

More than 400 fans came through the meet and greet line with trading cards, mini-bats, baseballs, jerseys, and banana hats, eager to meet Hosley and Trimble.

Plizga described Blanchard as one of the best interns she has ever had, with praise for his professionalism and reliability. Early on in his internship, Blanchard stepped in to help when George Mason Athletics decided to participate in Fairfax’s annual Fall Festival within the week of the event. There wasn’t a lot of turnaround time to get staff participation in the day-long event. Blanchard helped Plizga set up and then tear down at the festival. Then they headed back to the campus to work at a 6 p.m. soccer game.

Plizga also appreciated Blanchard’s positive attitude and demeanor. “Sometimes tensions can get high, but Evan’s positive attitude made the workplace a lot better. Everyone loved working with him, and he definitely boosted the mood throughout the day,” she said.

In addition to learning how to operate various technologies, such as the Daktronics videoboard used to promote events, Blanchard said understanding the importance of workplace culture, teamwork, and professionalism, and knowing how to effectively contribute to an organization were also important lessons.

His advice to students seeking internships is to develop good relationships with your professors and to always be on the lookout for opportunities they share.

To those wishing to pursue sport marketing, Blanchard said, “You have to be able to put yourself in uncomfortable situations that involve communicating with people, bringing up new ideas, and just trying out new things. You also have to be able to wear multiple hats at once, while ensuring that you stay organized by having a plan.

More than 30% of 91�� students who participated in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) this year reported spending time caregiving each week—for children, siblings, parents, or other family members. That’s a significant portion of the student body navigating coursework alongside responsibilities that many campus programs weren’t built to acknowledge. University Life’s Contemporary Student Services (CSS) unit is working to change that.

CSS’s monthly Student Parent and Caregiver Meetups are designed to foster connection and build support networks; research shows these activities are linked to increased student retention and success. CSS was recognized with the NASPA Adult Learner and Students with Children Knowledge Community’s Outstanding Undergraduate Student Parent Program award for these meetups.

The NASPA award honors innovative approaches to supporting the specific needs of student parents in higher education. “Supporting student success means recognizing those realities and meeting students as learners and caregivers at the same time,” said Joisanne Rodgers, CSS director. “Each student and staff member involved gives care, time, support, to ensure that George Mason student parents and caregivers have a place to gather, be in community, and know they belong and matter.”

George Mason alumna Veronica Vassar, MA Higher Education and Student Development ’25, said, “This space was one of the biggest contributors to my sense of belonging at George Mason.”

The meetups, conceived of and hosted by CSS associate director Shyama Kuver, began as virtual gatherings during COVID-19 lockdown in spring 2020. By fall 2022, the initiative had grown into an in-person program, co-led by undergraduate student parent and FamilyU Fellow Valeria Fernandez. After her fellowship, Fernandez continued her work with CSS as a contemporary student ambassador, helping grow the program alongside Caroline Simpson, then CSS coordinator and now New Student and Family Programs assistant director.

When Fernandez graduated, undergraduate student parent and CSS Ambassador Chathrini Sirisena stepped into the leadership role. Today, the meetups continue to flourish thanks to CSS student ambassadors Mahjabeen Rahman and Kaitlyn La; Ryne Kimlick, an undergraduate student parent and CSS peer mentor; and Maria Garin Jones, CSS coordinator.

That continuity—students carrying the work forward for other students—speaks to what the program has built over the years.

“As a student parent, being there with others just like me was so meaningful,” Sirisena said. “That feeling of not being alone in the experience is so important, and I am grateful we have been able to create that for our student parents.”

For Kuver, the recognition reflects something she has believed since the beginning. “The CSS meetups were my first program implementation at George Mason,” she said. “I believe in their importance and in their evolution. I believe in the spirit and necessity of horizontal support networks for our student communities.”

91�� is also a proud recipient of the FamilyU Seal, a national certification recognizing the important work done every day to help student parents pursue their education, access economic mobility, and thrive.

Originally from Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv, Gabriella Grabovska moved to the United States in August 2022 to attend college, leaving her family and familiarity behind. Navigating a new country on her own, she quickly learned to balance academic rigor with the challenge of adapting to—and flourishing in—a new cultural and social environment.

Grabovska will graduate in May from the Schar School of Policy and Government at 91�� with a degree in government and international politics. She also has a concentration in political behavior and identity politics and a double minor in political communication and forensic psychology.

When considering where to study, George Mason and the Schar School stood out for their programs and opportunities that they offered as well as its proximity to Washington, D.C., she said.

“Looking back, I know that I wouldn’t have had all of my internships, I wouldn’t have met different politicians, members of the Cabinet, or people in my field, if I was in Connecticut or New Jersey,” she said.

The Schar School’s Undergraduate Learning Communities program played a key role in helping her get started professionally. Grabovska recalled an event hosted by the Jurisprudence Learning Community (now called the Pre-Law Learning Community) that helped her eventually secure her first internship with the Committee on House Administration, Democratic Staff. Since then, she has completed six internships, holding positions with organizations including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and OpenSecrets, a nonpartisan nonprofit that collects data on political funding.

“The Schar School became my home in the U.S., especially Democracy Lab,” she said, referencing the immersive residential learning community. “I remembered how, in my freshman year, the Schar School and the Democracy Lab really made me feel welcomed and at home."

Grabovska's résumé is so long and varied because she took advantage of all the opportunities the university and its location offered. "I couldn’t say ‘no’ to anything. If there was an opportunity in front of me, I would take it.”

A student in the Honors College, Grabovska is also an award-winning professional ballroom dancer, president of George Mason’s European Student Association, an occasional model for the Office of University Branding, and a resident assistant for the Office of Housing and Residence Life. She also served as a deputy field organizer for NextGen America, a nonprofit that encourages political activity among young citizens. She enjoys salsa dancing for fun.

But politics, which have shaped her life since her childhood, is where her ambitions lie.

“Politics directly affected my life since I can remember—I didn’t have privilege of not talking about it,” she said.

She recited a list of dramatic political events—the 2014 Kyiv Revolution, the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014, and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022—as key events that motivated her to pursue a degree and career in politics.

Grabovska credits faculty and staff—including Associate Professor Jennifer Victor, Assistant Professor Shea Holman, Robinson Professor Steven Pearlstein, Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs Ann M. Ludwick, and Communications Manager Buzz McClain—for their encouragement and support during her time at George Mason.

One piece of advice that Grabovska would give to new or prospective students is to get out of their comfort zone and face their fears.

“A lot of the people that I met, a lot of the opportunities that I got, and the communities that I became a part of were all a result of me deciding to get out of my comfort zone and go do things,” she said.

She recalled an example where she met a future mentor during an internship at a law firm while waiting in the security line to enter the Capitol Hill Rayburn House Office Building in D.C. That brief introduction and its results reinforced for her the value of taking initiative.

Through her academic work, internships, and extensive involvement in campus life, Grabovska has turned her experiences into preparation for a career in politics and public service, grounded in the global perspective she brings from Ukraine and the community she found at the Schar School.
