For Colby, BA Environmental and Sustainability Studies '26, the experience was a direct extension of the analytical and communication skills she developed at George Mason.</p> <p>"When I first came to George Mason, I was interested in studying law, but I decided to concentrate specifically on environmental law and policy," Colby said. "My coursework helped me understand how policy decisions affect both ecosystems and communities, and that gave me the confidence to speak about real legislation with lawmakers."</p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/2026-05/gmu1.jpg?itok=sTz88wfM" width="393" height="560" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Sophia Colby on Capitol Hill. Through case-study assignments and applied policy analysis, she examined existing laws, identified gaps, and proposed solutions to environmental challenges.</p> <p>"My professors showed us how to examine real legislation and policy initiatives related to climate change and other environmental topics," Colby said. "The case study format made me much more comfortable articulating what policy changes are needed and explaining both the human and environmental stakes involved."</p> <p>On Capitol Hill, she discussed the Opportunities in Organic Act, the Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act, and concerns about the wood pellet industry with Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), Rep. Sarah Elfreth (D-MD), and Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC).</p> <p>"It was a great [opportunity] to discuss how issues like pesticides, wood pelletization, and deforestation impact human health as well as the environment," Colby said.</p> <h2>Building experience beyond the classroom</h2> <p>Colby's preparation also included hands-on research. During an internship with the U.S. Geological Survey, she analyzed species range shifts, conducted literature reviews, and navigated scientific databases to support climate research.</p> <p>"At USGS, I learned how to conduct scientific research that can be used to inform the policy decisions that shape our responses to environmental change," she said.</p> <p>The interdisciplinary structure of George Mason's Environmental and Sustainability Studies Program, jointly offered by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science, emphasizes cross-sector collaboration—an approach Colby said mirrors the real-world complexity of environmental work.</p> <p>Colby also presented her research at the 2026 Midwest Political Science Association Annual Conference, held in Chicago in April.</p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/2026-05/sophia_and_dr._kim.jpg?itok=U2epXO5p" width="560" height="356" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Sophia Colby with her mentor Younsung Kim. "[These skills] will help her become an environmental advocate who does not create conflicts, but instead brings peaceful and constructive resolutions to them," she said. "I believe she will be a strong force for environmental policy and sustainability, as well as a future leader in the field."</p> <p>Colby, who was in the <a href="https://honorscollege.gmu.edu/">Honors College</a>, said she found community during her time at George Mason through Alpha Kappa Chi, a fraternity focused on professional development and environmental stewardship, where she connected with peers committed to sustainability and advocacy.</p> <h2>Preparing for what's next</h2> <p>The Rachel Carson Council's Advocacy Day included policy briefings, advocacy workshops, and direct engagement with members of Congress. For Colby, the experience reinforced that the tools she developed at George Mason translate directly into public impact.</p> <p>"Communication is a big part of advocacy and climate resilience," she said.</p> <p>Colby hopes to pursue a career focused on how environmental policies disproportionately affect marginalized communities. "Getting involved in this kind of work is powerful and eye-opening," she said. "Knowing how environmental policy impacts communities really motivates people."</p> <p>For Colby, meeting with lawmakers was more than a culminating moment of her senior year—it was a preview of how her George Mason education has prepared her to contribute to building a future in which communities are better prepared to face environmental change.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div When he was in 10th grade, his dad gave him 3D animation software. “My dad had got my brother and I this really basic 3D program, where you could model characters and environments, and then make them move,” he said. “I was really into video games at the time, played for hours, but then that [software] sort of became like a video game. I could create my own worlds and stories, and I really just ran with it.”&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>He pursued his interest by watching online tutorials and using the software to create short animated films he posted on YouTube. After an animation course in high school, he learned to use the industry standard Autodesk Maya software, and a whole new world opened up for him.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>“I could do all these cool and fun things that kind of made the animation look more sophisticated, and it was great. By the end of that year,” he recalled, “I was teaching the teacher, and I was also helping her teach her night class.”</span></p> <p><span>Gottlieb credits his senior project in </span><a href="https://film.gmu.edu/"><span>Film and Video Studies Program</span></a><span> at George Mason for preparing him to work in the industry. He was originally planning a live-action short film until a classmate saw his designs and suggested he make an animated film instead. Gottlieb said that working on the project introduced him to animating with timelines, which he had never done before. The film needed to be several minutes long, which was a challenge. “A couple minutes is a lot in animation,” he said. “That's some heavy lifting, especially just for one person.”</span></p> <p><span>Gottlieb asked for special permission from his professor to make his project only one minute long because it was animated. “It wasn't until a few months in the program that I could show an update where characters are acting and performing and moving and then I think people were like, ‘Oh, OK, this is what he's going for.’ But I do remember liking the whole process of putting it all together.”</span></p> <p><span>Film and video studies professor Tommy Britt remembered that animated project and spoke highly of Gottlieb's work ethic during his years at George Mason. “I enjoyed seeing his dedication to an ambitious animated short film that many would say was impossible to achieve with the time and resources he had.”</span></p> <p><span>Gottlieb’s first job after graduation was at a visual effects (VFX) house just outside of San Francisco, where he worked with a computer-generated character in a live action film.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>“It was a terrible movie, but the team was fun,” he recalled, “[We were] a bunch of animators fresh out of college; we bonded a lot. Oftentimes what's more important is who you work with, not necessarily what you work on. That job will always have a special place in my heart.”</span></p> <p><span>While working for the VFX house, Gottlieb applied for Disney’s Animation Apprenticeship Program and was accepted. “After three months of training we were put on the first&nbsp;</span><em><span>Moana</span></em><span> movie, and we animated a lot of the&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3MV614Yvjo"><span>background characters</span></a><span>,” he said. “The little coconut demons, the Kakamora, were super fun.”</span></p> <p><span>When Gottlieb served as the animation supervisor for the short film,&nbsp;</span><em><span>Forevergreen</span></em><span>, he animated a portion of the shots in the film and played a role in giving it the stop-motion style, despite it being a CG-animated project. For Gottlieb and the team working on it,&nbsp;</span><em><span>Forevergreen</span></em><span> was more than just another film—it was a labor of love.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>“We did the project on our own time. Nobody was paid for it,” he said. “People were just extremely generous to be working on it, and it was great to work with the directors on that, and just to see their hard work and commitment and creativity be recognized. It was an honor to be part of the project and to see it get this far.”</span></p> <p><span>The 13-minute film about an orphaned bear cub took more than five years to complete and is still garnering accolades and nominations. &nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p> <p>Drawing on his success as a FAVS alum, Brendan offers current students one essential piece of advice for thriving in the industry as an animator: Find your niche. “Figure out what you like,” he said, “what you want to do the most in the animation sphere. Then find a way to learn that skill <strong>really, really well.”</strong></p> <p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ1EDWtENVg">Check out a video of Gottlieb taking about animating facial expressions.</a></p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="2c9f2848-fde3-4567-8e8b-a41f7e96e271"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://cvpa.gmu.edu/"> <p class="cta__title">Learn more about the College of Visual and Performing Arts <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="5ce785fb-e8bc-40cd-b890-4c4be778fc7b" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related Stories</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-f62cac1d4934b56751cb7c4fa0eceb6b80f579d6735625046ea7fcaa8a55c6d5"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/george-mason-capitol-hill-how-environmental-policy-training-shaped-one-graduates-path" hreflang="en">From George Mason to Capitol Hill: How environmental policy training shaped one graduate’s path</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 29, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/ms-finance-alum-built-career-foundation-through-academic-engagement" hreflang="en">MS in Finance alum built a career foundation through academic engagement</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 27, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/film-and-video-studies-alums-passion-animation-led-two-academy-award-nominations" hreflang="en">Film and Video Studies alum’s passion for animation led to two Academy Award nominations</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 21, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/spring-2026-commencement-pictures" hreflang="en">Spring 2026 Commencement in pictures</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 14, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/george-masons-class-2026-prepared-success" hreflang="en">George Mason’s Class of 2026 is prepared for success</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 14, 2026</div></div></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/536" hreflang="en">Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/146" hreflang="en">College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA)</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/996" hreflang="en">College of Visual and Performing Arts Film and Video Studies</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div> </div> </div> Thu, 21 May 2026 17:39:55 +0000 ckearney 345854 at Spring 2026 Commencement in pictures /news/2026-05/spring-2026-commencement-pictures <span>Spring 2026 Commencement in pictures</span> <span><span>lclarkg</span></span> <span><time datetime="2026-05-14T16:27:52-04:00" title="Thursday, May 14, 2026 - "Job titles will change. But the need for adaptable people and resilient people will not. You might feel like &nbsp;you're behind. But I’m here to tell you, not only are you ahead, but you've actually lapped some of your peers.”</span></p> <p><span>As he does at each Commencement ceremony to underscore a few of the many pathways to George Mason, Washington asked three different groups to stand and be recognized—first-generation graduates (which accounted for 26% of the class), students who came to George Mason via community college, and students who are current or former military members, or military dependents. All received warm ovations.</span></p> <p><span>Student speaker Saniya Darediya, a neuroscience major from India,<strong>&nbsp;</strong>recalled how she arrived in the United States at age 17 and the fear she felt as an outsider in a strange country. Their careers shaped generations of student-athletes, coaches, and staff, leaving an enduring imprint on the university community. Carolyn passed away in 2025, but her warmth and influence remain woven into the fabric of the program she helped nurture for nearly half a century.</p> <p>Carolyn Marsh began her career at George Mason in December 1975 as a sports information assistant. She soon became executive assistant to the men’s basketball program, serving eight head coaches over the decades. From John Linn to Dave Paulsen, she was a steady and trusted presence. Known for her compassion and personal touch, Carolyn built lifelong relationships with student-athletes, many of whom stayed in contact long after graduation. She often described her role simply: caring for the players like a mother.</p> <p>Jay Marsh’s journey began as a student-athlete. After serving in the U.S. Army, he enrolled at George Mason, earning a degree in business administration in 1973 while playing two seasons of men’s basketball. After graduation, he briefly worked in construction and coached part-time before returning full-time in 1976. Over nearly five decades, he became synonymous with athletics operations, overseeing facilities, events, and fundraising while ensuring a first-class experience for athletes and fans alike.</p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/2026-05/jwb_051426-gmu-vip-273-final.jpg?itok=JdJkfVId" width="560" height="425" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Mason Medal awardee Jay Marsh (right) with the student speaker Saniya Darediya before the ceremony. His expertise extended beyond campus, particularly in managing the Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament for many years. He also played pivotal roles in historic moments, including the 1985 women’s soccer national championship and the Patriots’ 2006 Final Four run.</p> <p>The Marshes’ generosity includes an endowed scholarship for basketball student-athletes and support for locker room renovations. The men’s basketball film room now bears Carolyn’s name, honoring her quiet but profound impact. Married since 1967, they built a life intertwined with George Mason. Photo provided.&nbsp;</figcaption> </figure> <p>“Large multinational or national organizations need people with knowledge of how people learn and how to create systems and supports for learning and development,” explained Lisa Giacumo, associate professor of learning design and technology in 91’s <a href="https://cehd.gmu.edu/">College of Education and Human Development (CEHD)</a>.</p> <p>Learning experience design (LXD) and user experience (UX) research are two key pillars of the CEHD’s <a href="https://education.gmu.edu/learning-design-technology/">learning design and technology master’s program</a>. Giacumo has spent her faculty career developing courses on accessible workplace learning, needs assessment, and evaluation, that merge theory with hands-on application to give students a “nuanced” understanding of real-world use cases. The research and design courses (i.e., EDIT 732 and EDIT 752) she leads currently pair students with live clients to develop solutions for LXD problems or new opportunities.</p> <p>“The recursive loop of asking for input, getting feedback, professional reflection, and making revisions is an important part of the process that is hard to conceptualize from textbook alone,” said Giacumo. “With live clients, students get a chance to see how things might work outside of a textbook while learning how to communicate as a consultant.”</p> <p>This semester, students worked with two startups: EMK Learning Solutions LLC and Research Sphere.</p> <p>“Working with a live client and a team really made the whole experience feel more like a UX job. You have deadlines, you have limitations, you have to make decisions and iterate. It feels very realistic,” said George Mason alumna Georgiana Patrichi-Abarca, BA Conflict Analysis and Resolution ’15, a current student in the learning design and technology master’s program. She’s been able to apply what she’s learned in class to her full-time job with the U.S. Department of State, developing training for a new piece of software. &nbsp;</p> <p>Master’s student Tyler Girvan came into the learning design and technology program with a background in video game design and graphic design. “Getting that practical experience from research inception to executing a prototype was the stand-out element of the course for me,” said Girvan. “It helped me understand where I can feed my past skills through these new filters.”</p> <p>Girvan continued, “You have to balance meeting the needs of the user while negotiating the ideas and goals of the client, and that’s a skill we were able to develop working with real clients as opposed to simulations."</p> <p>“The closer you connect what you do in the learning environment to what you need done in the performance environment, the easier it is for learners to transfer what they learned into desired performance on the job,” said Giacumo.</p> <p>Maurine Kwende, MEd Curriculum and Instruction ’15, CERG Learning Technologies ’15, and PhD Education ’23, is the founder and CEO of EMK Learning Solutions LLC, one of the participating businesses for the course. Her business works with companies to help improve their training and leadership capabilities, leveraging Kwende’s own expertise in learning systems and design. This semester, students worked on developing a professional development chatbot for EMK Learning Solutions that could coach employees when a human coach and trainer isn’t available or isn’t an option. The bot will also be a thinking and brainstorming partner for new employees to get a head start on ideas prior to meeting with their supervisors or stakeholders.</p> <p>Kwende found the commitment of the students in the course commendable. “They’re dedicated and passionate about our field,” she said. “In the beginning, it felt like a mentoring process ,which was very exciting. Then it became a two-way process: I mentored them as a consultant, and they reverse-mentored me in the areas of technology. In the end, the students helped expand my thinking and showed me the potential of the product. They grew a seed into a full tree.” &nbsp;</p> <p>“George Mason attracts many very talented, smart, and driven individuals,” said Giacumo. “These students contribute to these organizations’ success stories. And after the classes are over, my students build their own success stories by landing their next job or promotion and continue developing their consulting practices on a solid foundation.”</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="9840bbe5-9de6-408b-ace1-09b11d827a5d"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://cehd.gmu.edu/"> <p class="cta__title">Learn more about the College of Education and Human Development <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="8f013cf4-2746-42a3-a58c-801d66bd3d4f" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related news</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-15e80e3bbf3d845cc0f362f9013d9f13264cdd271335f0674ed5ee665ca98ad5"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/mcmeans-named-atlantic-10-golfer-year" hreflang="en">McMeans named Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Year </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 19, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/senior-knows-power-pathways" hreflang="en">This senior knows the power of pathways</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 8, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/learning-experience-design-course-helps-students-dive-head-first-client-consulting" hreflang="en">Learning experience design course helps students dive head-first into client consulting </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 6, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-05/mason-life-marks-20-years-enduring-impact-special-education" hreflang="en">Mason LIFE marks 20 years of enduring impact in special education </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">May 1, 2026</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2026-04/education-careers-week-brings-jobs-inspiration-george-masons-future-educators" hreflang="en">Education Careers Week brings jobs, inspiration to George Mason’s future educators</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">April 29, 2026</div></div></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/336" hreflang="en">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/536" hreflang="en">Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/6691" hreflang="en">entrepreneurship</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/166" hreflang="en">innovative classes</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4656" hreflang="en">Artificial Intelligence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/191" hreflang="en">College of Education and Human Development</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 06 May 2026 17:26:55 +0000 sholla4 345811 at Smithsonian connections helped shape this conservation scientist’s academic path /news/2026-04/smithsonian-connections-helped-shape-conservation-scientists-academic-path <span>Smithsonian connections helped shape this conservation scientist’s academic path</span> <span><span>ckearney</span></span> <span><time datetime="2026-04-29T12:05:51-04:00" title="Wednesday, April 29, 2026 - Later, he joined the zoo’s Reproductive Sciences Laboratory, assisting researchers studying new methods for preserving reproductive cells from endangered feline species.</span></p> <p><span>These experiences gave Meneses exposure to a wide range of conservation research and strengthened his interest in the complex relationships between organisms. Eventually, that interest led him to zombie crabs.</span></p> <p><span>Before beginning his master’s program, Meneses searched for a faculty advisor whose research matched his growing curiosity about ecological relationships. One scientist stood out to him— Amy Fowler, an associate professor who leads the Aquatic Ecology Lab at George Mason’s Potomac Science Center.</span></p> <p><span>Fowler studies parasitic barnacles that infect the tiny mud crabs of the Chesapeake Bay, manipulating the animals’ biology and behavior, making them zombie crabs. Meneses soon joined Fowler’s lab as a graduate research assistant and began designing the research that would become his master’s thesis.</span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2026-04/img_1167.jpg?itok=9QDxekJK" width="299" height="350" alt="Jose Meneses in the lab" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Meneses in the lab at Fort Pierce. Photo provided</figcaption> </figure> <p><span>This academic year Meneses was a Smithsonian Link Foundation Fellow and spent 12 weeks in Florida collecting mud crabs from traps he placed earlier in the summer and studying them at the Smithsonian Marine Station in Fort Pierce. Meneses’s project looked at parasite local adaptation—how parasites are better at infecting local host populations than foreign host populations. Every two weeks, he drove hundreds of miles along Florida’s East and West coastlines, pulling the traps from marina docks and transporting their tiny occupants back to the lab for infection trials to measure susceptibility across different populations.</span></p> <p><span>During his time at George Mason, Meneses also participated in three study-abroad trips that had a profound effect on his studies.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>The first took him to Indonesia, where he studied marine mammal conservation and visited a dolphin sanctuary where he helped collect behavioral data on dolphins and other marine species. The program also included a journey up the Mahakam River in Borneo to search for the endangered Irrawaddy river dolphin. “We found a small group of them, which was really exciting,” Meneses recalls. “There aren’t many left in the wild.”</span></p> <p><span>Another study-abroad course took him to Kenya, where George Mason students explored the country’s biodiversity, visiting the Maasai Mara and Ol Pejeta Conservancy. For his project there, Meneses studied a classic example of mutualism—the partnership between acacia trees and the ants that defend them from browsing animals like giraffes and elephants.</span></p> <p><span>“The ants get food and housing from the plant. And in return, they protect the tree,” he said. “I think Kenya is my favorite of all the places that I've visited.”</span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/2026-04/250716212.jpg?itok=aqkam0LN" width="560" height="352" loading="lazy"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Jose Meneses mentoring students in the Aspiring Scientist Summer Internship Program. As part of the program, Meneses and other students traveled to Roatán, Honduras, where they completed their open-water certification while diving along coral reefs. The trip included multiple dives each day and a reef shark dive he won’t soon forget.</span></p> <p><span>“It was incredible. We saw so much marine life,” he said. “I actually found a shark tooth. Apparently, that’s pretty rare.”</span></p> <p><span>As for what’s next in his career, Meneses said he is still interested in disease ecology but would like to transition to studying bats. He is applying to technician and research assistant positions in bat disease and behavioral ecology with the aim of getting more experience before applying to PhD programs.</span></p> <p><span>To students interested in pursuing research while at George Mason, Meneses advises them to go out and explore.&nbsp;“There are a lot of opportunities on campus, a lot of clubs, and a lot of cool people. Today, as a state senator, he draws a direct line between those experiences and the work he does in Richmond.</span></p> <p><span>Born in Bangladesh, his family emigrated to the United States in 2000 after surviving the devastation of severe drought followed by a catastrophic flood. He was 8. After a year in Washington, D.C., the family was made homeless when their building was sold and converted into luxury condominiums.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>Low-income and affordable housing helped the family survive in Falls Church, Virginia, as did the available community health centers and a web of public services. These experiences inform his public service to this day.</span></p> <p><span>“When you are struggling, when you’re stuck, that is going to be part of life,” he said. “But you are going to realize there are so many more people that would like to lend you a hand and say, ‘Look, we got you.’”&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>That perspective—equal parts realism and encouragement—reflects both his personal journey and the ethos he encountered at George Mason.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>At the Schar School, Salim, who lives in Falls Church with his wife, Fatimah, found more than political theory—he learned how to use practical tools in the real world. An example that continues to resonate: One class offered hands-on use of sophisticated software used by key agencies in Washington. That kind of exposure, he said, translated directly into opportunity.</span></p> <p><span>“For you to put that on your resumé, that was true real-life experience,” he said.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>Schar School faculty members with careers beyond academia helped map the terrain and put into focus how careers unfold, he said.</span></p> <p><span>“It’s not always you get a degree and you go right into government,” he said. “You can go into nonprofit, you can go into many other sectors” with a government or policy degree. That flexibility proved essential—not just for him, but for classmates who went on to roles across government, nonprofits, and even elected office.</span></p> <p><span>Salim’s trajectory, which includes being honored as the George Mason&nbsp;University Alumni Association Alumnus of the Year in 2025,&nbsp;reflects another lesson he shares with students: Impact often starts closer to home. After experiencing the range and complexity of federal work, he scaled back and realized he could make a more immediate difference at the state and local levels of government. His Schar School education, he said, “really fits in any of these levels.”&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>Starting locally allowed him to build relationships, experience, and a record that could grow over time. He now serves on&nbsp;several committees in the Virginia General Assembly, including Rehabilitation and Social Services, Courts of Justice, Privileges and Elections, and Agriculture, Conservation, and Natural Resources.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>Circumstances being what they are, current political headwinds have afforded him with another way to apply his penchant for public policy to a larger field. In early April, Salim, who&nbsp;works as a federal financial management contractor, announced he would be running as a candidate for Congress, joining a crowded field of Virginia Democrats vying for a seat in a newly created district in Northern Virginia.</span></p> <p><span>“It’s one of those opportunities where you help a lot of people at your current job and then you see you can scale that up at the national level,” he said. The party primary will be held August 4; the general election is November 3.</span></p> <p><span>Salim assured us his Degree Celebration speech will not be a campaign effort. “I’m here as a sitting senator, an alumni who enjoyed his time here, and really want to empower the students in the audience,” he said.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>He knows the audience will be students who are familiar with the classrooms he once sat in. The message, if his own path is any guide, is straightforward: Start where you are, use what you’ve learned, and don’t assume the path has to be linear—even if the opportunity ahead feels a larger than expected.</span></p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="9f8cb78c-b179-4935-bcbd-5ec08a849629"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://schar.gmu.edu/discover-schar-school"> <p class="cta__title">Learn more about the Schar School <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </p> <span class="cta__icon"> <div class="field field--name-field-cta-icon field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Icon</div> <div class="field__item"><div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-font-awesome-icon field--type-fontawesome-icon field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Icon</div> <div class="field__item"><div class="fontawesome-icons"> <div class="fontawesome-icon"> <i class="fas fa-question-circle" data-fa-transform data-fa-mask style="--fa-primary-color: #000000;
