In September 2009, during a behind-the-scenes tour of the Smithsonians National Zoo in Washington, D.C., hippo keeper John J. T. Taylor brought out a hippo skull to show students participating in the Smithsonian-Mason Semester. During the same visit, the students had the opportunity to feed Happy, a 5,500-pound Nile hippopotamus.
In December, the George Mason mens basketball team hosted a 20th anniversary commemoration of the programs historic run to the 2006 NCAA Final Four. During halftime of the game against Old Dominion University, there was a banner ceremony for former Head Coach Jim Larra簽aga.
