U.S. Military Transfer Credit

Coursework from the Air University, the Defense Language Institute, the United States Naval Academy, the United States Military Academy, the United States Air Force Academy and the United States Coast Guard Academy will be considered for transfer if a comparable course is offered at George Mason.

Military Science or ROTC credit earned at othercolleges and universities accredited by a George Mason- recognized U.S. institutional accrediting agency may be considered for transfer into the Department of Military Science.

Starting in fall 2026, U.S. military service transfer credit will be assessed using the Joint Service Transcript (JST) or CCAF/Air University transcript, allowing students to receive up to 30 semester hours of credit from Military Courses taken--with a maximum of 15 credits at the upper level. These credits count toward the overall transfer limits of 75 lower level and 90 combined lower- and upper-level semester hours. No transfer credit will be awarded for Military Experience.

Students who enrolled prior to fall 2026 and have completed basic training, may be eligible to receive up to 9 hours of generally awarded credit. These students may also appeal for course equivalents, receiving up to 30 semester hours of credits- with a maximum of 15 credits at the upper level. To request the generally awarded credit, applicants must submit an official Joint Services Transcript, CCAF/Air University , or a DD-214 indicating a discharge status other than dishonorable to the Office of Admissions.

The Bachelor of Individualized Study( BIS) and Bachelor of Applied Science ( BAS ) Programs have distinct credit limits, governed by their Credit for Nontraditional Modes of Learning policy. For specific details, students should consult the academic advisor in their respective departments.
