Isidore Nsengiyumva, only four years old at the time, was in the fields with his father and older brother in Burundi, when suddenly they heard the sound of motors and guns. Troops involved in the country’s civil war attacked their village, and rapidly, their lives were changed. “We hid in a bush, and when the noise of the guns and fighting subsided, we went back and found our home burned,” Nsengiyumva said. “That’s when my dad decided it was no longer safe.”

As the winter season approaches and we look forward to the Thanksgiving holiday break, it is more important than ever to continue the practices that have kept our campus, our communities, and our families healthy and safe.

Holton died Thursday at age 98. In 1972, he signed the legislation separating George Mason from the University of Virginia.

Service awards ceremonies will be held Nov. 2-3 in Dewberry Hall, honoring faculty and staff who have been at George Mason five years or more. There are 693 awardees this year, which is an increase of 100 honorees compared with the 2016 ceremony.
